What would you do with £50m?
Me?
I’d commission the design and building of a generic display hall, examples of which would be built at Newark, Coventry, EMA, Manchester Airport and two other sites. I would also pay for a staff of restorers and painters to work alongside museum staff to refurbish the numerous aircraft pertaining to each of the above mentioned sites. I would also pay for a small display hall at Waddington to house the Vulcan, to be moved onto the car park of the viewing area. I would also create the RAF Transport Museum at Brize Norton.
I would also finance the recovering of the Berlin Halifax and have it restored to flying condition, but I think I’ll probably have run out of cash by then. How about a flying Fairy Battle?
Finally, I’d probably pay to have a new stucture built at Hendon, a stand-alone library – digitised and made available online.
Now, what would you spend the money on?

That concept sounds great but I don’t agree that it should be in London. Such a site should be somewhere in the middle of the UK as this would reflect the fact that Britain’s aviation heritage covers the whole country.
I would agree, but London receives the most visitors and the media is more centered around the south.

Weds night lottery show
I’m sure they said on last night’s show that a sum of £50k had been allocated to raise a Sunderland off the seabed by Pembroke Dock
Why bother to fund that when there are already two complete examples in national museums – think what Elliott could do with £50k towards bringing the Whitley back from extinction……

I just thought about 3 Lancs flying in the UK and little bit of wee came out…..
I’m no Gregory House, but…
If you’re over 50 you really should see a doctor.
If you’re under 50….try watching the dambusters a few times. Try to build up an immunity to Lancs…😀

We need a national aviation museum based in London, comprising of the Science Museum’s collection of aircraft, add one aircraft from each aviation museum from around the UK, and aircraft that might end up being scrapped if they don’t otherwise find a home inside. Add Concorde (Heathrow), Britannia (Cosford), Comet and Trident (Wroughton) and we’d end up with a museum to rival thre NASM in Washington DC. Will it happen? Yer right. Firstly the RAF Museum would kick up a fuss, because it would take custom away from Hendon. Land prices in London would be horrific. The Dome might have worked as would one of the arenas at the Olympic village …. Some may argue that AirSpace does the trick. I have my doubts. A national museum on aviation has to be in London to attract the visitor numbers in order to prove we were once brilliant at designing and building aircraft.

I agree with the above but i would also help the lightning boys finish off their QRA shed, its an important part of history the cold war and apart from Cosford there is not much in museums about it.

And another thing…

The Dome might have worked as would one of the arenas at the Olympic village. My understanding is that they are more concerned about what to do the site after the games in 2012 than in the games themselves. We also don’t have anyone willing or able to donate the tens of millions needed to secure match funding from the Lottery. Some may argue that AirSpace does the trick. I have my doubts. A national museum on aviation has to be in London to attract the visitor numbers in order to prove we were once brilliant at designing and building aircraft.

They have already created the RAF Transport Museum at Brize Norton – they fly an historic fleet of Tristars and VC-10
One idea I had a few years ago was this: When the RAF retire the last VC10 C1/C1K, lease it for a number of special flights around the UK, so that enthusiasts, like us, can have a ride, before the old girl is scrapped. Just an idea!

I’d build a fantastic new technical museum on the Science Museum’s site at Wroughton – showing off all the exhibits like the Constellation and Boeing 247 that we normally don’t get to see.
Oh of course, they booted that one off the programme before we could even get to vote for it!!
So much for ITV and the Big Lottery’s interest in British technology 😡

Buy an airfield, with a grass strip. Get 2 hangers built on it (In a Shuttleworth style). Then set about buying a Bearcat, Sea Fury, Spitfire MK 19, Mustang, P 40 and p 63 for starters:p Then build the collection up from their (I would ove to have some WW1 and classic jets as well, Meteor, Hunter etc) and eventualy open it to the public and start running annual airshows.
Naturally I would learn to fly first….lol:rolleyes:

Totally agree with idea of building simple, cost effective hangars at several different locations, including the ones you list. Far better than the ‘iconic’ structures that are more like modern art that have previously been funded, that is not to say that locations like Cosford did not deserve a new hangar. The idea of some sort of travelling restoration team is very interesting and could easily be worked into the existing restoration plans of most of the regional preseravtion groups. It would be a valuable teaching aid and could enable younger team members to learn and gain new skills, useful for both the local preservation group and the wider UK industry. I am not so sure about finacing the recovery opperations you mention, such projects contain too many unknowns to be able to guarantee a worthwhile object at the end. And too much money has already been wasted by the Lottery on flying aeroplanes. Leave that to private enterprise, if somebody has interest (and money) to return a rusty, sunken hulk back into the air then let them do it. If the Lottery funds a project, the public should expect to gain access to that project and learn and recieve pleasure from it, a Nationally funded project that will give Local results.

Paying for staff and cleaners for the above…..
