The RAF in Northumberland??

Hi everyone,

I am currently researching the RAF in Northumberland and I am wondering if anyone has pictures of aircraft at the following bases as it is something that is never covered very well…??

RAF Acklington, RAF Ouston, RAF Eshott, RAF Brunton, RAF Milfield, RAF Morpeth (Tranwell), RAF Boulmer, RAF Charterhall etc…..

Thanks and cheers to anyone who can help!!

Hi Northeagle,, My info came from the press report on the NE Diaries site
and clearly gives a full acount of the the incident,,and states that 43 sqd
was operating out of Acklington,,names the RAF Pilot as Flt lt townsend
and then also names the german crew,,and yes the german aircarft made a forced landing 2 miles north of whitby,

also the other ref to the heinkle is on the same page,,North east diaries
section for Amble,,

I know. It was he date I queried. You stated September 3, 1940….it was February 3, 1940.

Best Wishes.
Robert.

3rd Sept 1940 heinkel 111 was shot down South of Amble at Duridge bay which covers a large area,,
shot down by Aircarft from 43 Sqd out of Ackilington,,all 3 bodies recovered and have been laid to rst in Chevington church yard,,

info from NE Diaries 1939 1945,i would think this is the one

happend the same day the first german aircraft to be shot down and crash on British soil and the allied craft came from
ACKLINGTON,,, agin info from the Diaries

I think there may be a date mix up here. 43 squadron were based at Usworth, County Durham, September 1940. Only He 111 that fits in with 43 Squadron was shot down February 3, 1940. Last seen flying out to sea east of Coquet Island lighthouse…3 bodies washed up some days later and buried at Chevington Cemetery…..one crewman missing. Shot down same day as HE 111 at Whitby, Yorkshire…first enemy aircraft to come down on English soil.

Best Wishes.
Robert.

Lindys lad will get the list soon..and post it no problem,,

If an air craft crashed near warkworth beach it would have been big news and
maybe a link can be found in the WW2 North East Diaries site which can be searched by town or village.I am sure you are aware of this site i cant get enough of it,,I was amazed to see that Amble and hauxley and many manymore towns and villages around had been attacked and even lists the casulaty on one occasion from Air Craft that straffed Amble and Hauxley Pit

Does anyone have any information on an aircraft which was allegedly a german bomber, visible at low tide somewhere along the Northumberland coast (south of amble?). I vaguely remember my mum telling me about it during a family beach trip many moons ago…. It was visible until at least the mid 1960’s.

By way of an update, since this thread has sprung to life again, I mentioned this aircraft to my dear old mum again today, and apparently it was visible on the rocks off Warkworth (near the caravan site) until the early 60’s.

Hi New to the board but i can see the debate has been solved by a couple of Photos and press,, but i have just been fitting a kitchen in a house in
stobs wood for an ex RAF Service man,, John Burns who was stationed at Amble Rescue Station 51-52 then moved over to Blyth
He recalls after you walked up the ramp, you met the winch house and beind
that was an L SHAPED building which was the cookhouse, rec room and
billit combination,,sadly he has no photos but intends to make a list
of the personal that where there during his time,,:D

Ambler, thats great. If you would be able to allow us to see a copy of that list, it would make a great display. This thread was designed as a research point for Wings Over Northumberland – a project directed by Phantom Phil, WWRgallery and myself. Any photos, recollections, etc are invaluable to us. Thanks again, and in advance

XL620 & XL605

Sadly XL620 is now just a nose section on the fire dump at Guernsey Airport…. XL605, her sister-ship from 66 Sqn is now being prepared to fly once again down Exeter. Would be nice if they paint her up in 66 Sqn colours!!!

It was indeed the BoB Airshow. I spent most of the day under a Shackleton’s wing!

Excellent photo that, 66 Squadron two seater. Was that at the airshow? Typical Northumberland weather as well.

Best Wishes.

THe first photo is of the standard work boat.

It was designed as a seaplane tender/crash boat and the concept design was put through it’s sea trials at RAF Mountbatten by “Lawrence of Arabia”. It was then produced with various refined design mods from the late 20’s

Part of the design concept was to aid flying boats who had lost a wing float. The floatless wing tip could be dropped onto the after deck railings to stop the aircraft turning turtle.

The link is to a preserved example.

The later range safety boats were derivatives of the ASR Launch and one used to be adjacent to the FSM Spitfire/Hurricane entrance guard at Hendon.

Ross

wow…

I wonder whether anything survives? (except wl745’s chevrons……..)

Cullercoats would make sence – we used to go there quite often… I love co-incidence like that…

Lindy’s Lad, eye-witnesses reported that a German bomber crashed half a mile off Cullercoates, and seaward of the Watch House, on the night of 22/23 March 1943. Possibly Do217E-4 U5+IN (wnr.1144) of 5./KG2 OR Do217E-4 U5+CR (wnr.4394) of 7./KG2 . In each case the pilot was a Feldwebel (ie insignia = three eagles) – but all crew members listed as ‘missing’..
