The "This is NOT a Merlin" eBay Thread!

Having seen so many items advertised as Merlin just lately, which are not, I thought it was about time I started this thread. A bit tongue-in-cheek, but on a more serious note, it is quite common to see, for example, pistons from all sorts of engines advertised as ex-Merlin, and nobody is out of pocket by too much if they don`t do their homework, but these first two are likely to end up with someone getting stitched-up, and these are not small amounts of money.

It is not my intention to post anything here if I have not already contacted the seller and given them a chance to correct the listing.
Rant over 😉

There are some people with a love of the macabre who would pay even more if it came with a tragic history, weird people. Thankfully I’m not one of them.

It was not out of the Aircraft mentioned and hence was removed from the site

Definitely not a Merlin…but closely associated thereto!

And possibly of interest?

Thanks Andy

I have managed to ascertain that the spar panel I have is indeed from this aircraft and one piece is fine for me thanks, as I am not a collector. That panel would end up hidden away in the loft for ever if I had it!

Rover Meteor

Would polish up nicely as an ornament, or useable for ground running, but cast, not forged, so no good for flight.
He knows what they are so as far as I`m concerned he is being dishonest, just my opinion of course!
He has about 40 of them and the last one went for over £60, his description of that one was a bit more honest, although it still said Merlin!

Rant over.

Buying a dubious item from Ewhatsit and believing it to be the real McCoy, is far better than sending a lot of your hard earned to a Nigerian who has offered you a share in his deceased uncle’s multi million $ fortune?:D

There is no doubt that parts would be ‘worth’ more if they were from a particular aircraft, or even better a well known aircraft, but surely nobody would be prepared to pay more for parts because the aircraft was involved in a fatal crash!

The seller suggested that this aircraft is being rebuilt…..is this in fact the case?

Yes, it is certainly being rebuilt.
Mark 12 could enlighten us further on this, but as I understand it, it is still in the ownership of Rolls-Royce.

…there is no getting away from the fact that they are linked to a sad event, and that on their own (without history) would be worth less.

As far as I can recall this was removed during a previous overhaul, and was not in the engine when it crashed. However, I saw this on his stall at an RREC event in 2007 and it was being advertised as Griffon! Oops

Indeed this is possible, as I have a tail wheel tyre from this A/C, also removed during overhaul; I seem to remember a member of this forum, was disposing of these items on behalf of one of the factions up at Bruntingthorpe, but there is no getting away from the fact that they are linked to a sad event, and that on their own (without history) would be worth less. (thats worth less , not worthless).

The seller possibly used Merlin in the title of his listing as there would probably be many more searches for Merlin than Griffon…..although far less than for Spitfire. He may also just have assumed that all Spitfires had Merlin engines!

Interesting what you say about this possibly being removed before the crash.

And the fact that it’s from a relatively recent fatal crash.

This isn’t a Merlin piston / connecting-rod (but I think some will have more important issues with the listing).

Hi Creaking door, you are right ! If piston and rod came from RM 689 then it must be out of a griffon. More importantly why is he selling something labled up as “Property of Rolls Royce”

Steve.
