New to NLS Moving Image Archive this week is a movie entitled Thurso Gala Week 1965. From seven minutes in it contains excellent footage of a Tiger Club display including a 3-ship Turbulent Team. Assuming the display was part of Thurso Gala week which airfield was used – Castletown?

Agreed, that would be quite a long haul for little aeroplanes! It must be the furthest north that the Tiger Club have performed in the UK surely? I’ve searched the British Newspaper Archive in the hopes of finding some reference to the display and confirming its location but have sadly drawn a blank.

Quite an epic just getting the aeroplanes up there from Redhill. There is a Stampe, Super Tiger, three Turbulents and a Jodel; at least! The Jodel probably had a radio but none of the others would have done – and what about the low aerobatics?
How far has flying come since those days?
