The Tirpity!

I have a letter from 1944 from a Frinton On Sea mother to her son serving in the Raf at Maison Blanche B.N.A.F. Algeria? Amongst the general news from home etc she writes [QUOTE] I was going to write, as the cook at the hospital where Sybil is, used to be cook at one of the houses in second avenue here, as the son Lieut John Cooper D.F.C. has been awarded a bar to the distinguished flying cross for gallant leadership in attacking the Tirpity recently…..
I have re-read it lots and cannot make it read Tirpitz! :D.
Does anyone have details on Lieut Cooper?
What does BNAF stand for exactly?
Was there another battleship very similiar to the Tirpitz but not quite the same , hence the name, meaning “Tirpitz -like!” :p if so why doesnt it appear in the history books!

78 squadron did, in fact attack the Tirpitz, but not from North Africa. Nothing to hand at the moment but google should bring up something.

She is writing to someone in N Africa, about the cook/ Tirpitz connection.

‘Any idea was the date of Cooper’s attack?

The ‘y’ in Tirpity might just be someone’s longhand, lowercase ‘z’

104361 COOPER John Charles A/SLdr, DFC London Gazette 7/12/43 p5337, bar to DFC LG 14/11/44 p5205 both awards with 78 Squadron. He’s the only John Cooper I can find DFC & Bar if it helps at all.
