Watching this film (loosely) on BBC2 at the minute, and Chris Plummer just got in an aircraft, twin engined, merlin engines, in luftwaffe markings. At first i thought one of the Spanish Heinkels, but the front end had a little blister like the bomb aimers position of the Lanc, and the fin was like that of a Lancaster/Halifax/Whitley etc, any idea what it is?

Glad to be of service 🙂 Just to expand on what Melv was hinting at,the Argus 411 is in a bigger league compared to something like a Gypsy as suggested by Auster Fan. The 411 is an inverted, air cooled inline but it’s a V-12!

Goodo! Not Merlins though – in line piston engines a la Gipsy Major, Walter Mikron etc.

Oops, yeah to me they looked like the Merlin’s as fitted on the Heinkel so i made that connection, should have put ‘looked like’ though!

Yep, that’s the one! Cheers guys

Ok,had another brainwave! Perhaps it was a Seibel Si204? This was a German equivelant to the Anson and a number were built in Czechoslovakia and France post-war. The Czech version was the Aero C.3 and the French was the Nord NC.702. There’s a listing of survivors here…

and a decent pic here…

I think you might be right. That was what I was thinking of when I said Aero 145.

That does look exactly like it – but i can’t explain the rear tail! Unless they used another aircraft for static shots of him getting in (later on in the film they showed twin engined transports with the same engines – although the nose was different, however they did have the correct rear fins)

It wasn’t an Aero 145 or a Morava 200 was it? They have been painted as such in the past IIRC.

G-APRR was not only painted up like a Heinkel, its front end was re-modeled like one, too! Note the dummy bombs.
I rather like it! 😉
(Thinking about it, it looks as though just the glazing has been remodeled – the lower nose panels look painted on.)

Looks very similar but quite a bit larger, i’m stumped! Very interesting aircraft, might start another thread about it, wasn’t it named after the village/town Desford? Would be interesting if it is, Desford is very close to me and can see it from my brothers bedroom!

Hmmm, well it’s not quite Heinkel size and it definately doesn’t have Merlins, but in other ways it sounds like the prone-pilot Ried & Sigrist Desford. No?

Good call AF.
I was knocking myself out trying to think of an aircraft with twin Merlins and a compound tail that was still around when the film was made.

Nope, they looked much older than that, could have been a specially modified Spanish Heinkel though
