The Union Jack???????

There’s an argument raging at my local RSL club, that the British flag is called the Union flag, and only called the Union Jack when it’s flying from the Jack Mast of a ship. Anyone know the correct answer

Referring to GaryB’s post above, I think you should keep an eye open for members of the KKK scouting your area prior to visiting vengeance on you for your error. The flag on the top of the motor car General Lee in the Dukes of Hazard was the Confederate Battle Flag, and not (shudder) the Union Flag which was the standard of the other side!

Strictly speaking that is correct but it has been common practice to call it a Union Jack under any circumstances since the late 1800s

Yes this is very true, I was in a Sea cadet group when i was growing up and they always told us “Its a Union Flag unless flying on a jack staff/mast”
Its a little like the Big Ben thing most people call the Parliment clock tower Big Ben and do not realise its just the Bell that has that name, The name Union Jack has stuck in peoples minds but is strictly wrong.

That is correct. Unless at sea, the British flag is the UNION FLAG. Upon being attached to a ship, it is desegnated the Union Jack.

I seem to recall the BBC covered this in the last year or so.
I’m sure you are right Steve. It is the Union flag unless flown from a Jack mast at which point they become Union Jacks according to what I remember.

I thought the Union flag was what was painted on the General Lee of Dukes of Hazard fame. When referring to the red, white and blue bit in the top left corner of the New Zealand flag in my experience it has always been referred to as the Union Jack and never anything else.

Perhaps Jonesy will know for sure…
