I love these uniquely British planes. They are such a common sight around the UK airports and have been since Danair introduced the first 146-100.
Strangely though, I have yet to find myself on one although that is set to change when I fly MAN-NCE on a BA citiexpress Avro in October!

But not at CDG! Lots of Cityjet examples based there, BA Citiexpress RJ100s, the odd Eurowings and Lufthansa Cityline examples, as well as more Air France liveryed examples courtesy of FlyBe.

It’s a real shame that Ryanair sold off all the Buzz ones. They were a great sight at STN. Not many around now, but I love the way the spoilers open up prior to landing. Caught this one at LHR last week.

Indeed a sad day when Bae decided to sop manufaturing the RJ. When I think of all the beauties we British have had, the Comet, Trident, VC10 and Bac1-11. We knew how to build some graceful, beautiful and thankfully, really noisy aircraft.

They are cute little planes, I cant wait for my trip! They are such good little performers, I bet them jets could get airbourne from my back garden!
Indeed, they are good performers at take off and landing, however the compromise for this STOL capability is a low and slow cruise performance!

I flew them with Aer Lingus twice and Go (Titan) twice as well. I did enjoy the flights as they were something different from a passenger point of view, and I know lot’s of the pilot’s on here can’t stand the things. 😉
I loved the sound of those flaps being extended, also that of the petal airbrakes being deployed too.

i had to get a trip on one, so i took a trip with buzz whilst they still had em last october, which was great. G-UKID both ways, which i think is now with cityjet, and if so i see almost daily at CDG!

And they have a habit of sending engine oil into the air conditioning, still with Retro-boy’s love of the smell of fag ash, he should be in his element.

Remeber flybe! I’ve flown on 4 of their 146’s, and i love em! As u say danairboy, they are unique, but Mark L told me all it is, is an aircraft with 5 APU’s 😀
I’ve also flown on a 146 that belongs to BACX, but was owned by BMA back in the 1990’s, i flew with them from EMA to AMS and got a deck visit on the way back!
Here’s a few pics of my trips with 146’s

There’s eight of them with white tails that have been parked at Melbourne airport for several years unable to be sold

There are really 2 possible seating configurations – 5 abreast (3-2) or 6 abreast (3-3). With the latter, the seats are VERY tight and uncomfortable. In the former, you get at least 737 comfort, probably better. I have never flown on a BA Avro, though I have had countless flights on a number of their 146’s. These are unfortunately configured 3-3. OK, for a short 60 minute hop I can put up with it – but MAN-NCE must be over 2 hours, surely?
They are big enough to use airbridges.
Apart from that, I like the 146/RJ. They are faster and bigger than any prop, although the Saab 2000 and Q400 come close for speed. The flaps make a huge squeeling sound when they extend – watch out for it!
They have done a great job in opening up some of our smaller airports. At places like the Isle of Man and possibly Guernsey, the 146 is realistically the biggest aircraft you can fit in on a regular basis.
With IOM in particular, you can theoretically use 737’s and A319’s (been on both from IOM). However their use is v. rare, due in part to a problem with windshear on finals to the main runway (which often means an approach over the sea). They are extending the runway to allow routine regional jet use, so maybe we will also see 737’s and Airbusses in the future.

Departing Nice airport
It’ll probably look like this when you take off, although I was on an SN Brussels Avro at the time . . .
