The Viking preservation shame………….

Hi All,

Photographed last month at Basel Airport, this very rare Viking is lying in a corner of the airport in open air storage 😡 😡 😡
This aircraft was once preserved for some decade in the National Car Museum at Mulhouse but, not in public view.

Most parts are in really good shape but for how many times?????

If anyone had more informations about this a/c (registration & a/c history), it will be very great;)

Has it got engines? Those nacelles look a bit empty.

Engines are removed since a long time, probably since the beginning of his storage in the Mulhouse car museum.

Thanks to all for your answers. I never heard about this airworthy preservation project!

Apart from the Swiss one, the Brooklands example, the superb looking ex-Jinnah one in Pakistan, a dodgy looking effort in SA ( it has tricycle undercarriage), and one listed in Austria, what others remain, apart from the Dinky Toys survivor from my childhood.

This should help answer your question 🙂

Despite appearances, there is a group working to save this machine:

http://www.save-a-viking.org/de/

Save A Viking is the first project of the Vintage Aircraft Club, set up to save the last existing (?) “Vickers Viking” from scrapping and to get it to Basel. The airplane belongs to the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) Alsace based at Basel Mulhouse Freiburg Airport, to whom the aircraft was donated by the Schlumpf Autmobile Collection/Museum. The aim appears to be to return it to flightworthy condition for possible use for the members of the Vintage aircraft club – if my very rusty German has translated the page correctly!

Work will be ongoing this summer.

Brooklands already got a Viking haven’t they?

Science Museum I think ought to be interested – but I bet they’re not 🙁

Viking G-AIVG c/n 220. First flight 20.5.47. To B.E.A as “Viceroy”. Renamed in Admiral Class as”Sir George Rooke” in 1951. Damaged beyond repair when tyre burst on take off at Le Bourget 12.8.53.

I do hope somebody can save this machine, where are all the panels’s ? Someone like Brookland’s museum would benefit this aircraft.
