The Werribee B-24 Liberator Restoration

The latest Wings Over New Zealand Show aviation podcast is now online and available to download and/or listen to.

“Episode 95 – Werribee B-24 Liberator” is in the Wings Over Australia serial, and in this episode the co-hosts Dave Homewood and James Kightly are given a guided tour of the magnificent Consolidated B-24 Liberator patrol bomber that’s under restoration at Werribee in Australia. Our guide is 95-year-old WWII veteran Nat Eichler, who served as a Radar Operator and Wireless Operator onboard RAAF B-24’s.

While talking about the restoration and the aircraft’s components that have been restored, Nat also talks about the museum and its plans, the history of the hangar and Werribee Air Force station, and his own service in B-24’s, patrolling over the sea north of the Australian continent in the hunt for Japanese shipping. Here’s the link which includes a load of photos and the audio show:

Absolutely. I really admire what you guys are doing there. Same goes for the Liberator team, that aircraft looks like brand new now.

Yes but not for many years which is not a bad thing right now as we need a) space and b) plan for our future move 🙂

Plus I make no bones about it – we don’t have enough experienced people on the ground to handle such a big aircraft. We have works underway on the Beaufort, DC-3, DC-2 and Catalina and they are big enough !

That’s good news Ewan to hear a start will be made on the restoration, fantastic. I assume it’ll return to Moorabbin later?

I think that Lincoln will form a bigger challenge again over the B-24, and that has been huge enough

Thanks Dave,
The work they have done to reconstruct the B24 is amazing. Fantastic job.
Now get that Lincoln back in one piece.
