Hi Guys!
I’m mostly mixed up with railway preservation, but I do have an active interest in aircraft too, but proberly nothing like you guys.
From time to time I’ve seen planes, which although are supposidly preserved, look more as if they belong in a scrapyard. which is a shame as the number of historic planes in the world is forever growing smaller.
This example is in Poland, near to the Russian border, and was in a small town museum, along with some other millitary equipment.

I’d be very interested to hear, what and, where is your worst preserved aircraft, which is in a museum somewhere, waiting for a bit of moeny to be spent on it to make it look presentable again.
Sorry, I’ve got no money, but it’s always worth casting the light of shame on these planes, and owners, which might cause them to do something positive. 🙂

they would never sell. thats thier national musem, even the russian space shuttle sits rotting in the open :p
What is SO annoying about Monino is the corruption in the country. There are loads of tourists and aviation enthusiast groups that visit this collection and pay cash to the person (guide?) on the gate. You think this money is going towards the upkeep of the aircraft, but you would be wrong! I went there in 1997 and a coachload of us coughed up a ‘fee’ for entrance, another ‘fee’ for photogaphy and a third ‘fee’ for video. I watched this person get off the bus and put 75% of the cash in his back pocket and took the rest to the office!
Now you know why the aircraft are so neglected, so if anyone goes there watch where your money goes?

Eddywinch 82,
Having seen the Blackpool Vulcan at the weekend, would say that I don’t think that there will be much left to preserve shortly…..in a shocking state.

Quite correct, although I don’t think that was actually their fault.
It was due to the wrong type of paint!!
As a railwayman I get used to wrong type of things (snow, leaves etc) and the first thing you do is learn how to pass the buck!!

Ah so it’s all your fault then???? I will be on a train on Friday so I may need to have a rant after that. 😮

They were the ones that repainted it with the paint which subsequently fell off!!!!!

Is the Lincoln just at Sandtoft? Thought that bits had been given away/loaned all over the place – Nermal
I seem to remember that there was a recent thread (in the last 6 months) that covered this story in great depth. It is a very complicated story.
The Sandtoft Lincoln is an emotive subject on this forum!!!

The duxford victor looks rough from the outside but wasnt she being lovingly looked after by a husband and wife team? (ashley can you check on this)!
The name Roger Brooks springs to mind. They did a lot of hard work on this aeroplane while it was in the Superhangar many years ago.
Such a shame about it’s current condition but hopefully it will be sorted out once it’s back in the dry.

I like the thoughts behind the arguement for the Comet and I tend to agree with you.
As for Sandtoft I think there are a few aircraft that should be included not just the Lincoln…

Lanc and lincoln at Sandtoft
P.S. I am amazed that nobody on this thread has mentioned the Lincoln at Sandtoft.
Willow don’t even get me started on that nit! What a complete waste of valuable aircraft. “Stored” is a term that should be used loosley. Dumped in a pile like so much unwanted garbage is better!

anybody got any pics of the blackpool vulcan, is she going to be properly preserved ?

I know that this will be contraversial, but I’d like to put forward the DH88 at Old Warden. I realise that it isn’t neglected in the same sense as the ‘large aircraft stored outdoors’ scenario, but the following points are worthy of note.
I believe (I am prepared to be corrected) that this aeroplane was displayed outside at Old Warden for many years allowing it to deteriorate.
The aeroplane has been ‘restored’ to an airworthy condidtion using non-original materials (they must regret that now). After which it was grounded for many years as it’s then operating base (Hatfield) was closed.
The aeroplane is rarely seen complete in public due to constant attempts to get it flying again.
The aeroplane has been damaged in at least 2 landing accidents.
The 70th Anniversary of the Race for which it is most famous has been largely overlooked due to the aeroplane being grounded for repairs.
It would surely have been better (hindsight – and my opinion) to have built an airworthy replica (as somebody else in the UK is now doing, I believe) and have this aeroplane on permanent static display in original condition. A good replica such as the Sopwith Triplane at Old Warden is in most respects just as good as an original as a flying exhibit. In my opinion (again) the DH88 deserves to be in a national collection such as the Science Museum (either location).
I know that the Comet is a treasured aeroplane at Old Warden. I am aware that the runway extension at Old Warden was ,in part, completed to allow the DH88 to operate.
I just don’t feel that, over the years, as a sole remaining and famous example, it has recieved the respect it deserves.

The gold medal winner should be the 2 shacks at cyprus!!

The sunderland Vulcan was being looked after until the main volunteer moved and could no longer make the trip. At least she hasnt been gutted like 607 at waddington.

Restoration
I am trying to find engineers with military fighter engineering backgrounds to help me in a restoration project of a “Legendary USAAF Warbird”. Anyone out there?? This is a genuine Plea, I am a woman with NO engineering skills whatsoever!
Hi Eric Mc!
It was one I had in mind of a UK entry, and this is the nearest thing they have to a WWII aircraft. It seems a shame the collection is left to the elements, like it is. I’ve been there on a number of occasions, and very little seems to change. 🙁

Here is another site from my travels in the Czech republic, which is located on the road between Opava, and Ostrava. There is a large museum nearby comemorating a large Russian battle from WWII, but what is interesting is they have log books from Czech Pilots who flew in WWII, for the RAF, and several bits from a crashed B17.

This makes me feel sad. I hope these ‘wrecks’ have a better future than I imagine they will have. 😮 😮
Thanks for the ‘unusual’ pics Kittyhawk.

Shame on Russia:p !
Hopfully, some of these warbirds will find a better future in the west. A lot of airframes have moved to europe and the USA. It seems that there are still some interesting planes to restore.
Any Buyers?:D
