The YAM Halifax

With all the debates about the authenticity of Friday 13th, thought I would start a seperate thread.

My own understanding (and I am sure there are plenty of forum members who know better than me) is that the wings and centre section are HP Hastings, with a few cosmetic changes, such as squared off wing tips, to make them appear more Halifax like, even though they are a slightly greater span.

Approx. 30 feet of the centre/rear fuselage is genuine Halifax, mostly from HR792.

The rest of the fuselage is an accurate new build, with the exception of wooden fuselage frames in the forward fuselage.

The tail plane is an accurate reconstruction, incorporating some original parts.

The ‘mocked up’ parts are the engine nacelles, cowlings, bomb bay doors and undercarriage doors?

Would this about sum it up?

I think we decided on ‘recreation’ rather than replica, sound more respectful while still indicating it isn’t a survivor and isn’t entirely correct. 🙂

Thanks and accepted, I’d lost track!

Here’s a picture I took of her outside in 1998, an awesome sight, quite simply, replica or whatever….

They are still there, peeling, unloved and ignored.

Awesome photo, even if the skull and crossbones should be on the left hand side – how did the panels end up in Sydney?

Thought the attached photo may be of interest, one I have had for some years amongst my miscellaneous collection.

The panels are laid out at in the Quantas offices at Sydney airport before their transfer to the RAFM. The owner and donator of them, Geoffrey Wikner, is the gentleman on the left.

As I said earlier, that a young museum (at the time) was able to pull off such a magnificent achievement is almost a miracle.

Absolutely. Could not agree more.

To enable squadrons to form up together in daylight prior to the raid at a time of radio silence?

A few pics I took a few years ago. She’s an impressive beast in the flesh, especially on the rare occasions she sees daylight 😎

I’ve always thought the Hercules engined Halifaxes were the best looking British bombers of the war, other than the Mosquito. And the best looking 4 engined bomber after the B-17.

re:

Well said David, the Elvington museum is one of the best memorial sites combining displays, buildings and aircraft with care.

The options: an a/c that to the untrained eye looks the part, and people are happy to pay £120 to go inside… highly regarded by veterans that future generations will be able to view.

or… no exhibit at all, perhaps a few battered parts.

Its hard to get into the heads of those who have not given years of their time building this exhibit, who have an issue with it!

Indeed,
That’s the difference between YAM’s Halifax and the RAFM Halifax. The former shows the grandeur of the type while the latter shows the horror of war.
Both compliment each other.
