The YouTube Music Video Thread!

Hi All,

Here’s a random idea! As there are so many differing opinions when it comes to music on here, post a link to a music video on YouTube that you really like, and maybe a little info about why you like it. It can be anything from any genre, as long as it means something to you and you like it.

Just one request… Please don’t turn it into a session of slagging off other people’s tastes! We all like different things, I’m just interested to see what people come up with!

First up from me is a video from Steely Dan’s live Two Against Nature DVD. The band are just awesome and despite the fact most of them are reading, it grooves like crazy. Ricky Lawson on drums and Tom Barney on bass make a rhythm section that is just a dream to listen to. The rest of the band are rather good as well!

Next, Edith And The Kingpin by Joni Mitchell, from the Shadows And Light DVD/album. A perfect example of how Jaco Pastorius could play three notes and just make a song almost his own. Joni’s sensitive musicality comes through beautifully as well.

I first heard Alison Krauss a few years ago and she immediately went onto my list of favourite female singers. Here she’s performing the James Taylor track Carolina In My Mind. (In the background on bass you can see the great Jimmy Johnson who plays regularly with James Taylor. Must have been interesting for him to do another version of this track).

A cover of the Nine Inch Nails track ‘Hurt’ was the last song recorded by Johnny Cash, and the video for it is possibly one of the most moving music videos I’ve ever seen. It does nothing to hide the fact Cash is a frail and old man, quite different from how most people think of him. His wife, June Carter Cash, who can be seen stood on the steps behind Johnny in bits of the video, died a few months before he himself did.

And finally, one of the ultimate drum and bass grooves (to me anyway), Animal by Toto. Jeff and Mike Porcaro… What a magical combination. (RIP, Jeff).

Sheehan is indeed a great rock player, but I can’t really call him ‘one of the greats’ when talking about players like Jaco! 🙂

Since there seems to be a sub-thread regarding bass players, what about Billy Sheehan? This is the bass solo from Mr. Big’s Addicted to That Rush.

Had a listen to some of these and I must say, the Portuguese track, I liked it

It’s actually Brazilian (Portuguese kind of with a different accent), but I’m glad you liked it! 🙂

Had a listen to some of these and I must say, the Portuguese track, I liked it … don’t understand it, but I have something with foreign music 😮

This one is from the singer’s youtube account, She’s called Idina Menzel, I really like her stuff and she’s my sort of genre, so feel free to check her out. This song’s called brave and it tends to make me feel more relaxed after tough comments in the school days, so here it is 🙂 (sorry about the lyrics on the video – but I love the lyrics to this song!)

Here’s a track from two songwriters I think were very under-rated by many as far as ‘pop’ music over the last 20 years is concerned. Roxette were the first band I ever saw play live when I was about 11 or 12 at Sheffield Arena. The whole experience blew my mind and I pretty much decided there and then I wanted to spend my life in and around music. In hindsight whether that was a good or bad choice I’m not sure, but either way, I blame Roxette!

This track was No.1 in Portugal when I spend two months there playing bass for a friend’s band around 4 years ago. I remember hearing it in a taxi and the large, spacious and warm sound instantly struck me. I remember Portuguese people at the time enquiring how I could like a song when I didn’t have a clue what they were singing about, but that didn’t matter. I’m a huge fan of artists who have the ability to fill the sound spectrum without cluttering it, and that’s exactly what this song does.
