dark light

Things you wished you had said.

Recently, a girl of about 15 nearly got herself killed by running across a pelican crossing before the green man (oops, it’s the more PC “Green Figure” now, isn’t it?) appeared. When she got to my side she came up to me, waved her arms in the air and yelled “I’m Mad! Totally F-ing Crazy!” and waltzed off up the street clearly very impressed with herself. Seconds too late, as always, it occured to me to smile sympathetically and say “No you’re not Love, you’re just a bit silly.” Maybe not the wittiest of rejoinders, but it would have made me feel a bit better…

“Yeah, I’ll have a Euromillions ticket. I think I’ll pick 1, 5, 18, 38, 45, with a 4 or a 6” :p

One of the greatest comedy lines ever, from the Steptoe and Son episode where Harold partitions the living-room,leaving the TV screen divided.
Harold – ” I think you’ll find I have the law of contract on my side.”
Albert – “I’ve got the knobs on my side.”

This thread started as humour and has turned quite meloncholy or morose.

I wish I could have been able to speak to my maternal grandfather more about his exploits during WWII.

He was on the last boat off the Dunkirk Beach in 1940, Later he was part of a 3 man gun crew on Mt Etna which got hit and only he survived. Sadly, and quite ironically, he was to die on the same beach he was evacuated from 36 years later aged 60. I was only 6 at the time.

My only memory of him I have, is him sitting at the dining room table with a smile on his face preparing to smoke his pipe.

Likewise my grandparents (both) on my mum’s side and my granddad on dad’s side.
All sadly gone before I was old enough to remember them. In the case of mum’s parents before I was born though dad’s dad did actually get to see me arrive in the world.

I wish i’d been able to say anything to my Grandparents on my mum’s side- they died before I was born and it’s one of my big regrets that I never met them. Hey ho.

Well I suppose I would of just liked to thank my grandad who was my father figure as I grew up living with him, he nurtured my interest in flying and fully supported me when I was running around at the age of 4 saying I wanted to be a pilot.

I’d also want to say sorry to him aswell – when he was in hospital in 1996 I visited him daily (I was 11) but then the hospital imposed a ban on kids visiting saying that they were more likely to bring in illnesses that would make the patients worse (my grandad had goodpastures) Anyway after kids were restricted to the waiting room I decided I wouldnt go because I couldnt see my grandad anyway (I was pretty sure he’d come home eventually) I remember leaving to come home on monday 6th of may 1996, I looked back, waved at him, he waved back and that was the last time I saw him, he died at about 6am on May 9th 1996. 🙁 It broke my heart and ive never been the same since.

Rex ‘Moose’ Mossop was an ex dual code rugby international who went on to become a famous Rugby Leaugue commentator. Some famous Mossopism’s –

“I’m sick of having male genitals rammed down my throat” Rex Mossop on the nude beach near Manly and people walking to and from their cars with nothing on. He became infamous for performing citizens arrests on them.

“If this game ever takes over from rugby league you can f*ck me in Pitt St.” What League legend Rex Mossop said to Johnny Warren during a break in an England v Australia soccer match in the 1980s.

“if I keep getting Boyd and O’Grady mixed up, it’s because they look alike, especially around the head”

One more from Rugby League-

“Rugby League is a simple game played by simple people. Rugby Union is a complex game played by w*nkers.” Laurie Daley, ex Australian League captain.

I really enjoy this type of innocent double entendre. It might be worthy of a new thread.
