ARMENIA INTENDS TO BUY 3 ATOM BOMBS AND NUCLEAR DELIVERY VEHICLE FROM USA

APRIL 1. The Armenian authorities applied to the USA to buy 3 atom bombs and nuclear
delivery vehicle. According to information ARMINFO received today, April 1 from
well-informed governmental sources, the official inquiry was sent to the Pentagon
through diplomatic channels. In its turn, the American Defense Department proposed
conditions of the transaction. First, Washington bans ARMENIA from using the atom
bombs against the USA and its supporters, as well as from selling them to a third
country. Preliminary value of the American atom bombs and the nuclear delivery vehicle
is about $15mln. In case of reaching any agreement, the two countries will sign an
interstate sale contract including both sides’ conditions. The purchase of bombs from the
USA has become possible after Armenia’s exclusion from the list of countries, to which
America is not allowed to sell weapons. Earlier Representative of the US Department of
State Philippe Ricker said “this decision was made taking into account positive trends in
Yerevan and Baku.” “The exclusion of Armenia and Azerbaijan from the above list will
allow us to more closely cooperate with these countries in military sphere in the name of
peace and stability in the Caucasus,” the representative said. Ricker also added that the
United States intend to “carefully examine the above countries’ inquiries about buying
weapons.” Armenia and Azerbaijan were included in the list banning the sale of weapons
in June, 1993, because of unsettlement of the Karabakh conflict.
