IN a decision that will warm the hearts of fast-food fans, US authorities have classified batter-coated, frozen french fries as a fresh vegetable.
The US Department of Agriculture made the controversial decision last year, but it only came to light last week during the course of a court case in Texas.
A Chicago attorney representing a bankrupt food distributor challenged the designation, but was shot down by a US district judge who ruled that only the USDA had the last word on the subject.
Nutritionists described the decision as mind-boggling, but USDA officials said their hands were tied by the Perishable Agricultural Commodities Act (PACA) which defines fruits and vegetables in two ways: fresh or processed.
“They fall into the category of fresh because they are not processed,” said agency spokesman George Chartier. “They are not transformed in the sense of being cooked.”
The controversial classification was made at the behest of the french-fry industry, which has spent the last five decades pushing for revisions to the Perishable Agricultural Commodities Act.

Are French fries actually evolved from potatoes?
