Digging a hole at the top of the Eastern Garden. It’s 4×4 metres and as deep as the clay line, average about 0.5metres. So, that’s 8 cubic metrics removed, at 1,602 kg per cubic metric thingy is about 12,816 kg. All by hand, hacked with a pickaxe then shovelled with a small hand shovel (It’s easier than the spade). Each shovel load probably had 0.75kg on so that’s 17,000 of them. The spoil has been spread all over the garden (No lawn left) and the hole will be filled with the remains of a WW2 Brick/Concrete Air-Raid shelter (Which I smashed to smitherines with a 16lb Sledgehammer…in 7 hours!….good job it was never hit).
Then there will be 4 inches of concrete on top and the sides, ready for my 3×2 metre Shed. And a bit of a Patio.
My back aches, a bit.
The spoil is full of small stones, which in an ideal world should have been sieved out. Her indoors can do that. Or, I may just buy turf and lay over it.
