Thomson Airways … Personal Update!

Thomson Airways – Volcanic Ash Disruption – update 16:30 Local UK Time Friday 16 April 2010

We have been asked to Personally Update Passengers on More active Forums.

Following the eruption of a volcano in Iceland, NATS (National Air Traffic Service) have confirmed that the cloud of volcanic dust is still within UK air space across most of the country today (Friday 16th April).

Thomson Airways, the airline for Thomson and First Choice holidays, has been advised that until at least 7am on Saturday 17th April, restricted flying in or out of British airspace is in place. The airline has managed to secure four long-haul inbound flights into Glasgow and Manchester airport this morning. Details of these flights are as follows:

o TOM093: travelling from Cancun (Mexico) arrived in Glasgow

o TOM081: travelling from Puerto Plata (Dominic Republic) arrived in Glasgow

o TOM025: travelling from Sanford (Florida) arrived in Glasgow

o TOM663: travelling from Bridgetown (Barbados) arrived in Manchester

Despite the restriction in place by NATS, the airline was able to land these flights as they were travelling from the west over the Atlantic thereby avoiding the volcanic dust and the air space around these airports was temporarily opened. In addition, the airline is also working hard to operate an outbound flight this evening, TOM128, travelling from Glasgow (originally scheduled to depart from Manchester) to Bridgetown (Barbados). At this stage, Thomson Airways does not believe it will be operating any other flights in or out of the UK on Friday 16th April.

Given the significant disruption to its flying programme, Thomson Airways has now taken the decision to cancel all outbound flights due to operate on Thursday 15th April and Friday 16th April (except flight TOM128). Customers who were due to travel on these flights may now:

o Amend to an alternative holiday without incurring normal administration fees. If the alternative holiday is cheaper than the original, then the difference in price will be refunded.

o If we are unable to secure an alternative holiday, we will allow customers to cancel with a full refund without incurring normal administration fees.

Affected customers, who booked via the website, are advised to contact our dedicated team on 0800 009 3833 which will be open 0700-2200 daily. Those customers that booked via a travel agency or a call centre should contact their booking agent.

Customers due to travel on 17th April are advised to visit http://www.thomson.co.uk or http://www.firstchoice.co.uk before travelling to the airport where the latest travel information will be posted as it is made available.

Kind Regards,

Volcanic Ash update

Following the continued eruption of the volcano in Iceland, the ash cloud has now entered UK airspace. As a result, Thomson Airways is likely to experience some disruption to its flying programme today.

We are currently working with the relevant authorities who have advised us that in addition to Belfast which closed earlier this morning, at 13:00 today, Manchester, Doncaster and East Midlands airports are also likely to close.

Customers, whose flights are due to depart on Sunday 16 May, are advised to travel to the airport as planned unless the flight is listed in bold below. Here, they will either be able to check-in as per their original schedule or alternatively if the airport is closed, other arrangements will be made which may involve travelling from another UK airport.

Flights affected 16 May:

Customers due to travel on TOM 314 Belfast to Bodrum at 1520 hrs should note this flight is currently delayed and therefore should avoid travelling to the airport and await further information from our Customer Services Team.

Thomson Airways is doing its very best to ensure we get our customers away on their holidays and will continue to monitor the situation closely. Customers are advised to check here for the latest flight information before travelling to the airport.

Customers currently overseas will be contacted by their Holiday Advisors if their return flights to the UK are impacted by the closures listed above.

Please note that there is no further information currently available at this stage, but for other queries relating to your booking please contact:

Thomson and First Choice shop bookings – contact the travel agent directly.

Portland Holiday bookings – contact our agents on 0844 8710873.

Web bookings – call our dedicated customer helpline team on 0800 009 3833, which will be open daily from 09.00 – 20.00.

Hi Lindy Loo,

These updates have been immensely helpful, thanks for all your efforts. I was delayed in getting from Puerto Plata to England, flight only, due to the volcanic ash and now have a flight tomorrow, God willing.

My query is regarding paying the difference in the price of the ticket. The BBC website (citing EU Regulations) states that passengers should not have to pay the difference if there rebooked flight is more expensive: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/8621779.stm
I have queried this with my contact at the flight provider (a call centre) and they say this only applies to scheduled flights, not charters. I am totally happy with this person’s service and believe she is following instructions, but just want to be absolutely sure that I have no way to try to recoup the extra I have paid. I will be flying back here again in a few weeks and the flights are now terrifically expensive so every little helps.

I would appreciate anyone’s input on this.

Hi there No worries about the Name 🙂

I can’t really speak on Behalf of other charter airline’s However i can tell you how we operate.

We would of course offer you an alternative flight, where possible. However, if the alternative flight offer is not suitable then a full refund will be given on application, including all fees.

Please note that in the event of a cancellation resulting from a factor outside our control (i.e. bad weather) we will offer a credit towards future travel, rather than a refund.

For this Ash cloud we have Contracted a Thomson Airways Rep in Every airport where a Thomson Airways Flight was suppose to Depart to Offer Passengers that Support they need.
It is those Reps who will Then offer the Passenger the Relevant Option to them.
Our Main aim With this Crisis is to Get back Passengers as Quickly as Possible However some Passengers Choose to Leave and find other Means on there own Grounds, These Passengers will Still be Intitled to A Refund and Credit on Possible Expenses Paid. However we Will Not Refund Passengers for Ferry Costs or Hire car costs Unless Thomson Airways were Aware of the Situation Regarding that Passenger(S) Through the Available Rep.

I hope this Answers Your Question, I do Check Back Everyday and Im sorry if you have had to wait a while for a reply. I will be happy to answer any More Questions you may have if i can.

Update for Monday 26th April 2010

The following UK departure for Tuesday 27 April has been rescheduled to depart on Wednesday 28 April:

Did you see the genius in one of the papers earlier in the week asking whether the flight restrictions only applied to economy class or whether business class passengers were affected, too?

It was quoted again on Have I Got News For You last night. 😀

This wasn’t an isolated incident. I was speaking to a rep of one of the airlines I deal with at MAN and she said she had several people ask that!!!

Lindylou. Thanks for all the up dates

Uh, I hate the public sometimes.

A local rag is covering the story about the efforts Thomson is making the bring people home.
One passenger, complaining about having to take a bus said: “Thomson have taken the cheapest option and are treating us like cattle”.

WTF do they expect? Chauffer driven limosine?
With the airways closed and trains not able to take the massive influx, the only other viable method of transport is the bus and coach.

Thomson Airways – Volcanic Ash Disruption – update 11.00, Wednesday 21 April 2010

Thomson Airways, the airline for Thomson and First Choice, welcomes the reopening of UK and European airspace by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) last night. Now that the airline has been given approval from the authorities, it can commence a full repatriation programme of customers currently overseas and begin operating outbound flights.

Today, Wednesday 21 April our priority will be repatriating as many customers as possible and as a result, a significant number of inbound flights will be operating back to the UK. We expect it will take a number of days before this programme of repatriation is complete. Our teams are working round the clock to confirm this flight schedule. For details of your arrangements please contact your overseas representative or call the 24/7 Holiday Line on 0044 247 6282 228/649 or text 82345. Repatriation programmes currently taking place via alternative modes of transport will continue.

All outbound flights will still remain cancelled on Wednesday 21 April so the focus can remain on repatriating customers and repositioning aircraft as necessary.

On Thursday 22 April, Thomson Airways will recommence operating outbound flights from the UK. Unfortunately, there are a number of cancellations and some flights will have to be rescheduled. This continues to be a fast changing situation and customers are advised to check this website before heading to the airport.

At present, the following UK departures for Thursday 22nd April have been cancelled:

TOM 172 East Midlands – Goa

TOM2410 Manchester – Alicante

TOM4418 London Gatwick – Faro

TOM4446 London Gatwick – Alicante
TOM1410 Newcastle – Faro

TOM5420 London Stansted – Lanzarote

TOM2402 Manchester – Lanzarote

TOM4404 London Gatwick – Lanzarote

The following UK departures for Thursday 22nd April have been rescheduled to an earlier time:

TOM 2412 Manchester – Tenerife Scheduled to depart at 15.30 will now depart at 06.00

TOM 1444 Newcastle – Lanzarote Scheduled to depart at 15.55 will now depart at 08.00

All other UK outbound flights for Thursday 22 April not listed above are scheduled to operate however there may be changes, including further cancellations.

At this time the Friday outbound flying programme is as scheduled, however we recommend customers revisit here for more details.

Customers whose flights are cancelled between 15th and 22nd April can:

Thomson Airways – Volcanic Ash Disruption – update 19.20, Tuesday 20 April 2010

As reported on news bulletins, some parts of UK airspace are expected to re-open today, following several days of closure. The main priority for Thomson and First Choice has been and continues to be providing welfare and support for those customers currently overseas following flight cancellations.

Thomson and First Choice have also put in place a significant repatriation programme for these customers. This programme includes the use of various different modes of transport, including cruise ships, coaches and ferries. In particular, two Thomson cruise ships have been providing assistance and are helping to bring customers home. Thomson Dream has been transferring customers from Majorca to mainland Spain and the Island Escape is currently sailing back to the UK from Madeira and is due to arrive in Cornwall on Friday (23 April).

Thomson and First Choice appreciate the patience that our customers have shown during this disruption. We do hope you understand that as a business that cares about our customers, we have taken the decision that the repatriation of those who are currently overseas is our priority. As soon as the airline is able to safely operate flights into the UK it will bring the remaining customers, currently overseas due to cancelled flights, home.

Subject to restrictions in UK airspace being lifted and full safety clearance being received from all relevant authorities, Thomson Airways is planning to operate selected outbound UK flights from Thursday 22nd April. Unfortunately, a number of flights due to operate on Thursday have had to be cancelled and some flights have been rescheduled.
