Today would have been the first day of Air Fete, a much missed institution.
What would they have done this year I wonder, bearing in mind the 90th Anniversary of the RAF.
I would have met my brother at Shippea Hill station and having got in, parked up, sorted out the gear, and probably have been selfish gits and set up the chairs on the flightline, well it was so big, we never felt guilty, beside, you had to avoid the dogs, why they were ever allowed in was beyond me, I have dogs of my own, but taking them to an airshow, God forbid, how did people think that their poor doggies would appreciate Lightnings taking off!!We would probably have already got through our breakfast of Polish Sausage and Bud and be on our way to view the statics.
What would have been there I wonder.
I reckon they would have pulled out all the stops to get the Vulcan there, even as a static exhibit, it would probably have generated a bit of cash towards it’s presumed flying days.
Sadly no F-117’s but I reckon a coup would have been a couple of F-22’s, possibly flying in from the States today.
Possibly there would have been a montage of RAF a/c from 1918 to the present day, starting with a Bristol Fighter and inevitably ending up with the Typhoon.
Of course, no Air Fete would be complete without the inevitable display teams.
Well we always used to see the Reds on what was normally their first display of the season, Saturdays only always featured the Patrouille De France, but I reckon in view of the 90th celebrations, all sorts of teams would have turned up, perhaps even the Thunderbirds, it could have been VERY impressive.
You never know, perhaps the F-15’s from Lakenheath would have been persuaded to do more than one pass.
It brings tears to my eyes to think what treats were in store for us this weekend, I reckon it might have even surpassed 1997, now that was a good year.
Lets live in hope it might happen again.
For those who haven’t experienced it, I’ve been to airshows up and down the country, but the Hall was something else, it had charisma.

Ah, many a fond memory of it all. Seeing the SR-71’s depart for the last time, and doing a see in and see off of the Reds on the tight apron in front of a very large audience…. A fab place to be.
