Spotting advice is hardly the province of FlyPast.

Oh I don’t know ? The two are not totally unconnected, apart from the commercial aircraft side.

A sad situation in many ways but I would have thought that it would be unwise to plane-spot in any country in that part of the world.

Most spotters are fully aware of the suspicion which the hobby seems to create in some countries..
Does that suggest they were being irresponsible or at least very naive..? Detailed guidance and advice would never go amiss, though…..

Most spotters are fully aware of the suspicion which the hobby seems to create in some countries. It would be helpful if Flypast and the other ‘enthusiast magazines’ could publish up to date guidance and warnings on a regular basis.
Which countries are safe for spotting ? Which countries have a zero tolerance of logging military activity ? Which airports have an understanding of the hobby ? Publish a ‘black list’… it could save somebody a spell in custody and a hefty legal bill.

Aircraft spotters need to understand that there is a misunderstanding of their hobby in a lot of countries. I for one do not fancy the idea of a prison cell in some of these countries.
