No not Flying Legends 2011 but around 20 odd years earlier
Might have been from the Classic Fighter Display when the three Buchon’s attacked the airfield and three Spitfires (MH434, ML417 & EE606) were scrambled. One of the best dog fights I have ever seen
Anyone confirm or have more details on pilots?
Cheers
Chris

Very rare and interesting footage. And poignant, if I correctly identified G-BOML and ‘EE606’.

Thought I would dig this old thread out as I came across this video the other day showing the 3 Buchons at DX in 1989 taking on the Spits

Found this shot of EE606 arriving at DX as well as another shot of the flight line
Regarding the Buchon pilots we have Mark Hanna, Walter Eichhorn and probably Reg Hallam then
H98 – The Boscombe Down show was in 1990 so a year after Charles Church was lost in EE606

Yes it was a long time ago but I clearly remember seeing EE606 and thinking how good it looked. Spare a thought Sunday as it’s twenty three years ago this weekend that Charles Church lost his life in EE606, who knows what might have been had he still been around.
Did he die after the Boscombe Down BoB display?
I remember seeing the Green and Blue twin seater, possibly the single seater. Nothing flew on the Saturday due to high cross wind.
Again small world as I now live opposite Blackbush airport, not far from where he crashed and in a Charles Church House.

I agree ’89. I walked from Whittlesford Station (was it called Classic Fighters then?) and arrived just as the Buchons were taking off. A glorious racket.
I was in awe of EE606, which may have been the first of the “new-build” Spitfires. I had never seen anything so gorgeous (even in its glossy camo!). To think it only lasted a few more weeks.
I’ll have a mass scan of photos one day…..
Wow, small world. I walked from Whittlesford too. It was a gloriously hot summer day. I arrived about 2pm. There were not many people around, very peaceful and quiet when overhead from behind the hangers arrived 5 P51’s in formation, low level, all in the same colour scheme. Could have been 1944 all over again!
One of my fondest memories.

If Walter Eichhorn was flying the third Buchon, it most probably is the 3rd one, D-FEHD, owner Hans Dittes (AFAIK it always had a four blade prop as Buchon). It was used to build Bf (Me) 109 G-10 Black 2, (now Yellow 3) D-FDME, now with Messerschmitt-Stiftung (EADS).

Thats how I remember it 92fis. I was with the Charles Church collection at that time – myself and Mr Melton arrived at DX on the saturday 10th to prep the Buchon for the following day – it had been at DX for a few weeks prior to that for filming. John Lewis arrived the next morning (of the show) in EE606. Seems a very long time ago now….

11th June 1989, and Mark Hanna flew G-BOML.
Nice shot, one of my favourite shows.

Was only a guess so could be, I’m not sure if Dave was flying the Buchon then.
Thanks for the responses
89 sounds about right. Think I had my Canon SureShot then
BK – soon as you mentioned Reg Hallam I am sure he actually flew into Duxford for a show in the Charles Church MkV
So probably Reg Hallam, one of the Hanna’s (Mark I think) and maybe Hoof in the Spits and Ray, Walter Eichhorn and one other in the Buchon’s. Was Dave Southward flying 109’s then?

Buchon G-HUNN (at the front of the line-up) is still wearing the scheme from Piece of Cake, so I would agree – just prior to filming Memphis Belle.
By: hampden98 - 25th June 2012 at 16:58
That would have been around 1989. Filming Memphis Belle.
I have a similar picture with all three 109’s in the same camo.
When I went there were 3 Buchons, 5 P51’s (all same camo), and 5 B17’s as well as an Avenger, Tigercat, Harvard and possibly a B25 on the flight line.
Your picture must have been just before that.
In the background is a Richtofen Pilatus PC2 pretending to be a `baddie`.

I would guess at Ray Hanna, Reg Hallem & Walter Eichorn in the Buchons & Mark Hanna, Nick Grey & John Lewis in the Spits?????
