Through Check ins and Baggage Check

Me again!

Feeling inquisitive today…;)

Whenever I’ve flown on a 2+ leg journey, I’ve always been able to check myself and my baggage through for the full journey, meaning I never have to worry about my bags and all my boarding passes are given out at my oubound airport. Everytime I’ve done this though, I’ve flown with the same airline on each leg or airlines with code share agreements.

Can you check yourself and your baggage through if you fly with different airlines on each sector of your flight?

Does it make any difference if you purchase different tickets for each leg, or do the tickets have to be bought together.

If I get this answered, I’ll sleep easily tonight.

Thanks, as ever. 🙂

I dont think Iberia is in Star Alliance (surly one world) but my parents checked in for their Iberia flights at Belfast City Airport when leaving on a bmi flight to LHR so they just went direct to the lounge for Iberia apon arrival at LHR.

My School is one of the UK’s largest overseas boarding school and we draw over 450 pupils from China,Thailand etc all over that area. They all travel back via LHR (most of them VERY rich) and they checkin for their long haul (usually with Virgin to Hong Kong or with Thai to Thailand) at Belfast City with bmi and same for luggage also!

Don’t even have to be in an alliance to throughcheck baggage…

I flew Swissair BSL-ZRH-LHR (yeah, it was a cheap reward ticket, the promotion was only valid on Swissair flights Switzerland-LHR, not the Crossair direct flight from BSL) in 2001, and connected to BA for LHR-GLA. I checked my luggage through to GLA at BSL, although I had to get a boarding pass for the BA flight at the BA transfer desk at LHR.

Admittedly, neither of my two bags arrived in GLA with me, one came the same afternoon, from LHR on a bmi flight, and the other arrived the following day from ZRH, via LHR…

However, on the return flight, my luggage arrived in ZRH no problems (there was no connecting flight to BSL, so I got the train from there). I was surprised BA let me check my bags through, despite only having an SR e-ticket. Again, I had to get the boarding pass at the LHR transfer desk (Qualiflyer, this time), but over all, no problems.

If you fly on Star alliance members, you can. I don’t know about Oneworld and Skyteam. Last summer, I had 2 different tickets, my UA roundtrip from ONT to LHR and my BMI roundtrip from LHR to AMS. On the return, I presented both tix to the bmi agent, and my bags were checked all the way through from AMS to my final destination. The only thing she couldn’t give me was my boarding passes for the 3 UA segments. But that was ok, I just got those when I got to LHR, and benefited because the UA agent upgraded both myself and my brother for the LHR-IAD leg to Business class. Even if you fly with a marketing partner, like Emirates is with UA for example, I’m sure they can check you bags through, and you would just have to get your boarding passes prior to boarding your 2nd carrier.

I don’t think so except maybe if you use those airlines which are member of the same alliance.
