Tibenham / Priory Farm fatality

Not nice to read of an accident at this super little strip that has left a (non-flying) pilot or ex-pilot dead.

Sad news.

Extremely sad news. Al was a stalwart of the Auster movement for over 30 years, including being a very organiser of Auster Club Fly-ins, whilst also being a Jaguar pilot. Sorely missed by everyone who knew him.

Al Mathie was a highly respected LAA pilot coach and Auster owner. A true enthusiast and a gentleman.

The following has been issued by the LAA, with his wife’s permission.

It is with regret that I must inform you that Al Mathie, an LAA coach, was killed over the weekend. The full circumstance of the accident are being investigated by the AAIB. The accident occured when exiting a Piper L4 Cub with the intent of sending his student solo. I will issue more detail on the accident and guidance in due course.

He’ll be sorely missed.
