Tiger hires more flight crew

Discount airline Tiger Airways will employ up to 120 workers, including 60 flight crew and cabin staff, at its Australian HQ in Melbourne.

The Singapore-based carrier will also extend its contract with John Holland Aviation Services at Melbourne Airport, creating 60 maintenance jobs.

John Holland will perform heavy maintenance checks on Tiger’s A320 fleet in Melbourne instead of using technicians in Singapore.

The heavy maintenance is in addition to a line and overnight maintenance contract it signed last July.

Premier John Brumby yesterday welcomed the announcement and said it complemented a rise in passenger numbers at Melbourne Airport in the last financial year.

“More than 24 million passengers used Melbourne Airport last financial year, bringing valuable dollars to our economy,” Mr Brumby said.

Melbourne Airport chief executive Chris Woodruff said the growth was a result of recent major investments that had offset a history of under-service.

Mr Woodruff said the booming economies of China and India were largely responsible for the growth, which he hoped would continue.
