Power failure on take off at Toowoomba Qld. Buffeted by high wind, nose dived into fence. Pilot walked away 🙂

Shame about the aircraft but glad the pilot walked away. Any landing you can walk away from is a good one?

AgCat. Not off the cuff, but roughly W.W.II, by the Air Min. That’s why the British-based ones had them in the first place. See the linked thread in my first post.

I think we’re at cross purposes. The main point was in answer to why an Aussie Tiger didn’t have them. That was because (IIRC) only British based Tigers were ever required to have anti-spin strakes, which is why anti-spin strakes exist on Tigers at all.

Australian, Canadian, New Zealand et al Tigers were never required to have them by the military or civil authority in those countries (as far as I’m aware) which is why they don’t have them.

I’m not – in any way – talking about modern civil requirements.

Really? Do you recall the dates when that was the case?

Adrian – a confession – it came up when I searched for a check!

AgCat, that’s not what I said. I said ‘were mandated‘. Like the lack of the Dutch tail on Tigers based in the Netherlands, the requirements aren’t the same now as they were back in the mid C20th.

Anti-spin strakes are not mandatory for UK registered Tiger Moths. Take look around the aircraft park at Woburn in two weeks time.

Anti-spin strakes were only mandated in the UK. Australian Tigers never had them; it’s one of the distinguishing differences.

Messy, but it could have been a whole lot worse!

Am I right in thinking that it’s got no anti-spin strakes fitted? Not they’d have anything to do with the accident, just curious!

Not too bad really. I suspect he never got in the air, but just went wobbling off sideways

There’s only one thing worse than bending your Tiger Moth, and that is bending your friend’s Tiger Moth….

Power failure on take off

Didn’t mention anything about engine failure in the article QldSpitty posted. Said it was due to strong crosswinds on takeoff. Mind you the media may not have all the facts (BIG surprise there! 😉 )
