The reports might have been a bit too quik in the production.
Quote from the G-APAO report. ‘by the tendency of the tail-wheeled aircraft to turn into wind’!!!!!!!!!

Third Man.

Well said Harry Lime. Far too much twaddle talked in forums generally by people whose knowledge is zip. This is especially the case before any official report is published.

Quickest report I recall seeing.

Still, if it is reasonably clear what happened, and the pilot says that IS what happened, no need for The Spanish Inquisition.

I think that pilot was having a bad week ( see second link)

The third man was the first on the scene and extricated the passenger and pilot from the aircraft… He, the third man, was not injured in any way…

And for all of your information, the aircraft was carrying out a go around at the time of the incident, not landing.

There was a displaced threshold in place at Duxford due to the stragglers of Helitec being parked on the grass, close to the taxiway, thus preventing the use of the full length of the airfield.

The wind was swinging favouring 24 one minute and 06 the next, with a large crosswind component.

Some comments posted on here are so judgemental; isn’t it a shame you can’t post without making silly uninformed comments on landing abilities etc. when you clearly don’t have the facts, mainly because you weren’t there, didn’t see the incident, didn’t assist in any way and probably, your only flying experience is MS Flight Sim!.

Well done D, nicely done.

Harry Lime.

Glad both people on board are Ok, From photos I have seen of aircraft damage looks pretty bad. But ultimately nobody was hurt and thats the important thing.

Whatever happened, it looks as though both Tiger and occupants won’t need too much fettling to have them in full working order again.

Maybe the mysterious “third person” was actually the passenger’s underwear? Or the chap whose bank account the insurance comes out? Either could have come to serious harm.

Or perhaps someone fell off trying to extricate the crew… Could have been worse, could have been stuck up a Ferris wheel!

Tiger Moth Incident at Duxford

There was a crosswind at the time from the South of the airfield, and I imagine that is why it came in with the Left wing down, countering this.

After bouncing, it appeared to continue flying in what was more like Brendan O’Brien Flying Circus style. I thought it may have been some kind of low level showboating flypast.

After a while, you heard what sounded like the engine being wound up as if he was going to go around. The Aircraft levelled off, but after what seemed like a few seconds, for some reason an attempt was made to land. Looking at my photos I would estimate about level with the American Aircraft Museum and possibly off the grass strip area. By this time you realised that there was not enough room to stop. From my photos after touching down, it appears he veered to the right, before I lost sight it behind some other parked aircraft.

I could see after a couple of seconds that it had stopped nose up and had not flipped on it’s back so assumed that the two people on board were o.k.

There was a Crosswind at the time, and it was very warm.

There will be an AAIB report I am sure -not sure how you can ever make a Tiger Moth safe -they have been crashing since the 1930’s ! Watching aircraft has always had a danger -however the drive to Duxford is far more dangerous in statistic terms so its a case of risk analysis!

:rolleyes:you’ve seen me drive then!

I hope everyone involved recovers quickly. Not wanting to stoke any “what if…” fires, or detract from this light-hearted discussion of the incident, but that could have been much nastier if it was an airshow day – plenty of people (myself included) sit around that spot and we could have had our own version of the Reno disaster……:(:(.

I assume there will be an investigation and recommendations to prevent a similar accident from seriously injuring me one day……

Its self perpetuating on FlyPast!! I was going to say it was the next person in the queue for a flight who’s feelings were hurt ! I hope whoever it was is feeling better!

Paul – The ‘third person’ looks set to go into the annals of FlyPast conspiracy theories -with a lack of hard facts I am going to speculate that the person was on the ground either watching or engaged in some other business when they were bumped by a Tiger Moth !

Tank bank = the grassy knoll 😉
