Caught it on Saturday too – made good TV, but obviously filmed over several weeks if not months, probably hence the continuity errors – like the first tentative foray into the tunnel immediatly after it had been pumped out – with acro props in place and partly concealed halogen flood lights fixed to the walls! Best way is to just enjoy it and not get too envious at not being involved in such digs! 😀 Bet they were a bit miffed at finding that it had not been completed, as these bunkers normally reveal a treasure trove of artefacts – I have seen more than they found on an afternoon’s walk in the Argonne!

Remember finding one of those big pumps several years ago at a road works site near Ypres – the workmen said take it, but the wife said NO! 🙁

It was interesting though as my Grandfather was a tunneller in Flanders, but typical Time Team, nearly, but not quite, a bit like the Reedham Marshes B17 programme which is on satellite endlessly.

I too have never seen the Invaders in the Marsh programme which is more disappointing as it was in the area I hail from originally, havent found it on the net or anywhere !

I didn’t see all of the programme (even though it was on twice) and I’m left wondering what will happen to it now? I saw a piece about the potential threat the shafts (and the tunnels presumably) pose due to collapse or subsidence. So, will it be filled in or preserved/maintained for future study?

I think for this one the artifact was the bunker, amazing to think those corridors still exsisted underground.

by ‘fire’ – the only bit related that I saw was one of the work lights contacting a synthetic hose sending a cloud of noxious smoke up the shaft.

By editing error, do you mean the preview which mentions an underground fire yet there is no further mention of it in the programme itself.

That’s the one!

Don’t think I’ve seen that one at all. I thought I’d seen them all too
Was it a Special or a normal show?

You didn’t imagine it, P9373 has been placed on the civil register.

I found the following on the CAA register, http://www.caa.co.uk/application.aspx?catid=60&pagetype=65&appid=1&mode=detailnosummary&fullregmark=CFGN

G-CFGN previous id P9373, it was registered by Mark One Partners with the registered address in the Cayman Islands.

*snip*unlike the Reedham Marsh (1999) and Wierre-Effroy (2000) episodes.

Did I imagine it, or did I see in the register news section of Flypast/The Other Mag this month that the Wierre-Effroy Spitfire had been placed on the British register?

I realise that the same could be said of many Spitfires now, particularly those that have been rebuilt several times, but having seen that “crushed can” of broken metal being pulled out of the ground piecemeal, I find it incredibly hard to consider anything bearing that serial to be the same aeroplane. A dataplate with a nice new-build ‘plane round it maybe, but the same ‘plane?…

TT Aircraft digs

Not sure what went wrong with the B-17 dig – I understand another dig took place & significant remains were found sometime after the TT left the site – but I am not qualified to comment – perhaps someone who actually attended could?

We certainly wanted to investigate further contacts we had identified on our TT project, but were not able to do so due to their restrictions & sadly there is little chance of us ever returning to the site – We did find this though! 😀

I dont think they were happy with the B17 dig, specially when parts turned up already out and on show at a local museum!

the spit dig in France was spot on with a great excavation and recovery.

TT

As Alan has said for some reason the series that the A-26 “Bombers in the Marsh” excavation appeared in does not seem to have made it to satellite/cable channels – looking at the regularity they repeat those, perhaps they felt they had enough to keep them going for a few years yet!? 🙁 It has turned up on More4 a few time though 🙂

Re the recent special – I understand that the Vampir farm (also known as Strohgut) complex was found a while ago and there is plenty of information and original photos on this forum

A contact of mine visited the site earlier this year having arrived in the area the week before filming, when they were pumping it out in preparation. There are many of these bunker/tunnel complexes surviving as they fill with water, which preserves them and helps prevent their collapse 😮

sorry – no recording device

was this the same program I saw over here on History Television??? it ran as two back-to-back 1 hour (sorry, adverts included) segments on Nov 10 in the early afternoon (and most likely about 8 hours later).

They were after the ‘bunker’ complex (12 metres down) known as ‘Vampire’??… at Paschendaele… this was one of the greatest pieces I’ve seen then do!

It was shown in January 2005 at the start of that year’s series. It has been repeated a handful of times on More4 but has, to the best of my knowledge, not been sold to any of the satelitte channels unlike the Reedham Marsh (1999) and Wierre-Effroy (2000) episodes.
