We spent a couple of hours in Tintagel last week and my son asked me to show him where the Hunter crashed, so Kelly’s Ice Cream in hand we strolled around to the spot. On the day of the crash in 1979 I was at School, we heard about the incident at lunchtime and I bunked off and walked over to Tintagel. Of course most of the place was cordoned off but there were lots of RAF vehicles and people, a Sea King landed in the Car Park and later in the afternoon a 41 Squadron Jaguar made a few low level ‘photo’ passes over the site.
Although I grew up only 3 miles from Tintagel and my Mum still lives nearby, it’s one place I rarely visit. I didn’t realise that the petrol station had gone, and it was nice to see that this house has been named “Hunters Rest”.
I stood there for a few moments trying to imagine the stricken jet heading straight towards me….glad I wasn’t there at the time!
