Titchwell near Kings Lynn, whats close?

I’m staying here a few days in August, the drive from home takes us past Duxford which is always an option, but what else is in the area that I can head to in case the antique shops that are on the radar for the other half start to bore me?

Holkham hall is close-by lots of events go on there.

Beach at Holkham is great too if you keep to the main beach, and not stray.
Would hate to see you go home with eyes like this 😮

The lads have all given some good suggestions, with not many stones left ‘unturned’

One place not mentioned is the RAF section of Gt.Bircham’s main Church

St.Mary’s at Bircham to be precise

There are over 60 RAF graves (commonwealth & U.K.), plus 11 German

Two of the (seperate) German He.111 crewmen, were respectively victims of Beaufighter pilots Guy Gibson & John ‘Cats-Eyes’ Cunningham.

I mention this, coz I KNOW (BSG) = that you collect diecast aircraft & as ya know, both Black (Night) Beaufighters have been released by Hobbymaster.

Also, one of the Heinkel He.115 crewmen is from a VERY significant “step” in the RAF upgrading it’s own aircraft (namely Wellingtons, for example)…..

Aforesaid He.115 hit a Radar-mast & then crashed on the beach near Sheringham ~ when being later examined, it was ascertained the ‘115 had “self-sealing-fuel-tanks” which were inspected by British boffins, who later perfected the manufacture of this type, which had previously eluded them.

Countless other Halifax, Hudson, Anson, Whitley, Hampden & Lancaster crewmen are interred nearby.

It’s at the junction, just where the B.1155 almost touches the B.1153

Walk thru the double-gates & it’s at the back, secluded & VERY peaceful.

You might be lucky enough to hear one of the local Tornado’s, one of Coningsby’s Typhoons, or several of the 48th’s F.15 Eagles passing overhead, as they often do.

There’s an old 8th Air-Force (1st-Air-Division, B.17, Station # 172) 0.50cal gunnery school at Snettisham beach, but not a lot left to see (checkout Google) ~ there are a few pictures at the Snettisham Beach Park if you nip-in for a beer or two (they’ve got TWO pool-tables, too;))

Finally, try the (once) excellent & HUGE 2nd-hand bookstore in Burnham Market (known locally as “Chelsea-on-Sea” :D)

Deceptive it is, as the front looks rather small & “Mickey-Mouse”

However, once inside, it’s cavernous !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In prev’ years I’ve bought a 2nd copy of “Battle of Britain Then & Now, Vol.V” outta there for £ 20.00, as well as a few Osprey (Ju.88/Ju.87) for about £ 3.00 each 😉

Ordnance Survey maps WERE cheap there once, but I ain’t been for last two-years !!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s on the left, as you’re going North outta Burnham Mkt on the B.1155
on the same side as the ‘Hoste Arms’, but MUCH further-up, by the trees.

( “Brazen Head Bookshop” )

Plenty of disused airfields such as Docking, North Creake, West Raynham, Sculthorpe, Little Snoring, Langham, Great Massingham, Bexwell and Sedgeford.

Sculthorpe is far from disused, particuarly in the past couple of weeks.

The Herc’s taxing around the place was keeping me awake last night!

If the dates coincide, the Bircham Newton Memorial Project have an open day at the end of August:

http://www.rafbnmp.org.uk/

If you have a look in the ‘Latest News’ section there’s mention of the various dates in there.

Also you have the Sedgeford WWI airfield a few miles inland from Titchwell, there’s quite a bit of info on it at the Bircham memorial.

There are some good second hand bookshops in Holt with some aviation. Worth looking at Bircham Newton windmill for the views. The old airfield and pub at Langham is worth a look. Also the airfield and church at Little Snoring. The church has a scoreboard from the Mosquitoes based there. Don’t forget to get samphire and cockles at Well’s !!

Apart from a lot of sea, Fenland Aviation Museum, Wisbech, Bircham Newton Hertitage Centre and City of Norwich Aviation Museum, Horsham St Faith.

Plenty of disused airfields such as Docking, North Creake, West Raynham, Sculthorpe, Little Snoring, Langham, Great Massingham, Bexwell and Sedgeford.

Active airfields Marham, Lakenheath and Mildenhall are not that far away.
