Earlier today at the airfield I train at I was training for my PPL. I flew solo two weeks ago (on the day before I was 16 and a half) and today I did my 2nd solo flight. As my instructor left the aircraft, I taxied up to an intersection of runways. It is basically an X shape, and the RW17 was in use. I heard an aircraft state that he was one a short base leg, and I couldnt see him so I decided it was best to wait until he had landed. I was at the hold for the runway ( there are no taxiiways, just two runways (4 runway numbers). I continually looked up and couldnt see any aircraft on base leg or final. Then I heard their final call and couldnt work out where they were. As I continued to search for the aircraft I looked directly ahead of me and a Cessna shot from left to right about 20 feet infront of me on the runway. Well, runway 17 runs from right to left, so he landed the wrong way, he landed on RW35. That did lots for my confindence as a begginer pilot!!:p It was scary though, and I think he got in quite a lot of trouble. Especially considering he was in a new aircraft with GPS’s and everything!

I agree Moggy. Unfortunately as you know too well many pilots don’t fully understand the actual lack of protection under information and air to ground service, believing that just because someone ‘advises’ it may be clear to land, etc then that is good enough for them. The American system cuts out the is he/ isn’t he a controller middleman and leaves it clear whether positive control exists or whether you need to sort things out yourself.

I think what Mr Weaver is saying is that he treats anything with “At your discretion” appended, as an instruction.
That’s what’s so scary about it.

??? It gives instructions but it can’t give instructions?
In the interests of safety I believe we would be better off ditching the poxy air to ground service which is routinely abused by people believing they are professional controllers. While the information service is moderately satisfactory at most airfields it’s time to ditch them both in favour of an American style Unicom facility.

Moggy I think you might be going a little to deap, for a radio air-to-ground or vice versa can be a good thing, keeping you updated about situations and giving you advice about what to do, for instance “taxi and hold at your discretion.”
Our information gives us instructions with your discretion on the end, for it can’t give instructions it is a good way of safely monitering situations, and most air/ground to radio stations at airfields are normally situated in good view of the runway.
I once saw a shed built up on about 50ft of wooden planks, where a little man sat operating his radio.
For these might not be operated by NATS control ATCS most of the people who sit their and do it, do fly and hold PPL or upwards.
A position at a farm strip down near wolverhampton is going as a radio operator at this strip, for it provides food and fuel and B&B in the farm house, and the farmer having his PPL and a plane is letting out his cessna, for im not exacly sure of its location I know people do go in and out of their, funny I cant find it on the chart?
Maybe I should apply for the position? (Part-time postion/w-ends)

Never trust a student pilot for he will be to busy looking at the view, for an error will cause your funeral in something which was well worth the cost.

Didn’t that nut check his heading when on final? You were right to hold where you did even though you didn’t have him in sight.
I am 14 in a month and have already started my training, on my first lesson I was told to follow a C 172 down to base when I lost sight of him, we couldn’t find him, next thing he’s bouncing down. He’d taken a short base without declaring it. My instructor rattled him when we got on the ground!:)

What a prat, sorry to sound so creul about the matter but yes these things do happen, I will give you an event of my experiance on a hot summers day in G-BPBM (PA-28-161)
Information has just cleared me to land, I know its not informations job but when it is busy they really can help by telling you what to do, ofcourse “at your discretion” followed at the end of each transit.
I touch down, not to badly actually and this Gyrocopter comes out of no-where up my rear, I am on the deck slowing from 50 to 10 so I have a quick glance behind, he was VERY close, so I thew in the throttle and hit hard right and swang the aircraft round onto a taxi-way, lucky there was one, otherwise it would have to of been grass.
Thier are prats everywhere, many pilots who are licenced and have bad ways, so watch your back, I DO!

Hmm A/G?
Sometimes think that’s worse than having nothing at all.
Tends to give a false sense of security.
Anyway – Well done you. Good airmanship on your part.

Its Air Ground, so its ‘XXXXXX Radio’.

Wise move – not to move! 😉
We always look out on final just crossing a runway in a car. (It’s a controlled airfield). Some day there is something out there.
Best regards

Scary stuff, but you did right in waiting.
What is the level of ATSU there? Are calls suffixed XXXXX info or XXXXX radio?
