Today at Hendon

Popped up to Hendon today to see how the Lib was getting on, and managed to get a few decent images by using the ‘night’ setting on my ‘point and shoot’ and steadying the camera by using a mini-tripod against various walls and posts etc.

Here are a selection, and by the way the Grahame-White hangar was open. I think it’s only been shut once when I’ve been, so I must just be lucky.

Geoff.

The Hampden is a long term project which will almost certain take 8 to 10 years to complete

Sounds good if it does happen, if by that you mean both halves together, on it’s undercarriage. You wouldn’t be able to tell that the other side was different unless you looked head on, the fuselage is so thin

I thought that the Hampden was going to be half restored, I.e. one side restored, the other left as recovered from Russia. I could be hopelessly wrong though.

Best wishes

Is the Hampden relatively complete then? Thought it was only the tail section. Would be very nice though, believe theres a Hampden under restoration at East Kirby as well, would go nice with the Lanc

Must confess that I’d rather see the Hampden fully restored.

The only qote I’ve ever heard from the RAFM was it would take 10 years, all the restoration staff and the entire restoration budget to restore the Halifax.

Would it take much to restore the Halifax? Such a shame to see all the other bombers standing up with their heads held high in the bomber hall, and the Halifax lying on the gruond like a sad puppy. Although we have wrecks like that to thank for a lot of aircraft preservation, i’d rather see her preserved as she would be 60+ years back, she’s also the only Halifax with a front turret as far as i know

Good move,

The Liberator really belongs at Hendon as it was used in large numbers by the RAF. Pity now that with a restored Lanc, B-17 and B-24 the Halifax is looking like a bit out of place against those shiny airframes next to it.

Should i have brought that old chestnut up again??? :dev2:

Ehmm Yes 😀

Perhaps a rethink of the way she is displayed is in order.

The Phantom was present by October 1995, but when it arrived I don’t know.

I haven’t been to Hendon for 3 or 4 years and then only briefly. I don’t remember seeing the Phantom. Is it a recent addition or did I miss it?

The B24 looks good next to the lanc.

Yes it would appear to be that way…I doubt the Lanc would have moved to put it the other side of the Hall…..Shame she always looked good next to the Lanc…….Still B24 a welcome addition…… 🙂

Wasn’t the Wellington in the position now occupied by the Lib?

Nice, but what’s in the place of the Valiant now then? And what was moved for the Liberator? Must seem a bit odd now with the Lancaster being flanked by two American bombers
