Today I met an F100 driver

Funny how things happen.

Mrs Moggy and I were headed off to the DIY sheds yesterday with trailer in tow when, at a set of traffic lights, I saw steam issuing from the bonnet.

A glance at the temp gauge told me all I needed to know and we pulled off to the side of the road, finding the engine bay looking a little damp and the rad looking a little dry.

Two quids worth of mineral water topped the rad up, but we didn’t get very far. We got as far as a pub, just outside the compound of Stalag Luft Center Parcs – Elevden

In the four hours we waited for diagnosis, then roadside recovery, we got talking to the landlord. It turned out he is a guy with dual UK / US citizenship (GI Bride stuff – though a bit more complex than that) who has about 2,000 hours on the Super Sabre.

So, if you are ever heading up through Norfolk and you fancy a quick refreshment break and some aviation chat, just turn West off the A11 at the Elveden traffic lights, and the pub, with a warm welcome and aviation interest, is right there.

Funny, just last night I was chatting with a fellow cast constable (were working up Pirates of Penzanze) and he mentioned flying. I asked what and he said he was in F-4’s in Nam and then later a stint at Top-Gun. One of the most exciting things he did was put on a space suit and zoom climbed to right at 90 thousand feet.

Have to chat some more…..back stage whispers while waiting out turn on stage. Might have to have him over for a pint!

Moggy ,back in the Mildenhall airfete days I use to stay at this place and spent many hours talking to this guy into the early hours over a pint or three , Im glad to hear hes still there. He has some really interesting stories, I believe it was his mother who married a high ranking US officer and hence moved to the states where he joined up , he told me that when they were due to go to Vietnam he believes it was his mother who pulled some strings with her husband to get him a safer posting (which really annoyed him ) as he ended up getting posted back near his old home at Lakenheath.
His call sign was Tiger 1.
I will have to get B&B there again as I havent stayed there since the last Airfete.

His biggest beef was that he wanted a tour in Vietnam and never got one.

He flew from Lakenheath.
