Today in history the Avro Arrow was cancelled.

Watched the programme and found it very informative and interesting. I didnt realise the politics involved behind it all, including the dodgey deals that went on.
Was in Galgary back in the 80’s, what ever happened to the Fokker Triplane that was in the basement of the Planetarium?.

I love the ‘legend’ that one of the prototypes was spirited away by the guy running the company and could be sitting in a hangar somewhere!!
I wonder if there is any truth to it?, as the Canadians were more successful at cancelling it than we were with the TSR-2 as we made the ‘mistake’ of letting 2 survive!!!, were all they have is a nose.
But it is an awesome aircraft that was too far ahead of its time and worried the yanks because of it.

Yes it was very “dodgy” , the worst affect was on the Canadian aerospace industry. I do not believe that it ever recovered.
I am not sure about a Fokker triplane, but we do have a Sopwith triplane replica in the Calgary aerospace museum.

It is such ashame the political short sightedness of the politicians. I had Rusty Russell who was in the AVRO office with the president when the call came in to stop work on my show the other day and he said it was the end of 14,500 jobs all in one stroke. In return we got a useless missle system built in the U.S. which only worked if it carried a nuclear war head (its ok to detonate those in our north after all) and it destroyed the aerospace industry in Canada. You also have to take into consideration that the government bascially canned AVRO’s private interests when they had them change production away from the jet liner to build more cf-100’s during the korean war so all the company had left was the government military work. As Rusty eluded to after the show though Canada still does not have an all weather interceptor for our geography and climate so in the end yes cancelling the project was a huge mistake. I guess we could purchase some Russian aircraft now because that is the only other country that has similar geography and climate to us here.

I thought the U.S. provided Voodoos as the CF-101 and replaced these after long service with CF-18s?

The arrow was replaced by bomarc missiles which in turn were replaced with the voodoo?
