Well, not much happened in 1940, 41, or 42 for 609 (West Riding) Squadron – but in 1943…..
March 4th. The raid last night was on London – there was a second raid at 04:30 hrs this morning. Three Jerries were destroyed. ‘B’ Flight were in a very poor state for aircraft, so ‘A’ Flight did most of the patrols. The reps of the daily rags came down and Bea did a terrific beat–up of the deck for their benefit – he put up a wizard show and nearly turned his Typhoon inside out. Geoff, John, Olaf and myself shot a dreadful line to the Yorkshire Post reporter.
March 5th. The publicity racket still goes on – today the squadron had its photograph taken – whilst this was going on a FW dived over the deck at 400+. Five minutes later when one of ‘A’ Flights kites was circling round, all the AA guns around opened up on him. Bee got on the phone and raised merry hell – and rightly so.
Haven’t got any diaries for 1944 or 1945 I’m afraid. Never mind.
