Todays Storms, any trouble?

I battened down the hatches last night, even in our comparitively sheltered part of Essex, it was pretty bad here, but it seems to have been very strangely short and sharp, ie a duration of only a few hours, starting at about 6:00 and now easing. Apart from the barbecue chairs spread across the lawn, no trouble, but I’m just nipping round the corner to see a client so I’ll be able to spot any damage, not that I want to.

due to go flying this morning…was called off last night as Leeming stated they expected 56 MPH Crosswinds…the Grob Tutor can take off at a maximum of 25, is that correct?

Hi Pete,

Why not report them to the local HSE office – I’m sure they will rap a few knuckles (or not – as the mood takes them).

Down here at Gatwick it’s still windy, bit no where near as bad as it was on Monday…

Further comment.
Working in the building industry, I’m not a great fan of some of the ridiculous Health and Safety issues that we have to put up with.
However, I’ve just nipped into town and we have a mega wind problem here and there are blokes working on the roof of the highest structure in town, Braintree water tower, being converted into flats and currently having a bunch of blokes on the roof without safety harnesses, it’s madness, I made sure that I parked far enough away to avoid a corpse on my roof.

It wasn’t supposed to be as bad here, but it was/is worse.
The fun and games started at 18:00, I was at the drawing board when the lights went out followed by a shower of sparks from the pole mounted transformer at the bottom of the garden, then on again, then off and more sparks, then on, then the most enormous explosion, it really was spectactular, sparks and flames everywhere, it plunged a large area of Braintree, street lights, houses, traffic lights, into a complete blackout, not often you experience such an event at close quarters.
I rang EDP, who didn’t have a clue where it had happened, ‘We’ll be there at 19:00’.
By now, the neighbours were swarming about in the road, one idiot had phoned the police, another the fire brigade, can you believe it.
The fire brigade turned up and had to stay with it in case a fire broke out, give me strength, it’s in open countryside, apparently a tree had blown down on the transformer causing a short, a very small tree incidentally, meanwhile the sirens of emergency vehicles were heard racing everywhere.
Then of course, some neighbours didn’t even have torches, let alone candles, I ended up handing them out up and down the road, one neighbour didn’t even have anything to light them with, another one complained that she was going to miss ‘Hotel Babylon’, Britishness in the face of disaster, eh!!
My missus nipped up to the chip shop and we had a nice candlelit meal, great to relax, with no TV, CD player, computer and have a good old debate about serial killers instead, at least we had a gas fire to keep warm, though the dogs were a bit puzzled about what was happening.
I got out the camping stove and checked to see if some of the old dears were OK and needed a hot drink, they were the stalwart ones.
At 20:30, I went out the back hoping to find an army of engineers, instead there was a lovely bearded old boy with a very small van and a pair of stepladders and small torch.
‘No problem, I’ll just give HQ a ring and I reckon you’ll be back on shortly, or it could be nasty, then we’ll really be in trouble’.
At 20:53, Braintree lit up like a Christmas tree, shame really, we were having a very pleasant evening, then we were back to reality and CSI.

During the night the weather was atrocious, the wind and rain kept us awake and this morning our greenhouse had pulled itself away from it’s moorings and was threatening to fly to the town centre.
As I write this, I can see branches from other trees smashing themselves against the transformer, I’m just waiting for another firework display.

It’s batten down the hatches and prepare for rough weather again tonight. We have high winds and squally showers here at the moment. Hope it doesn’t get too bad though as I have to go out in it.

Strong winds from about midnight till about four with heavy rain easing off to drizzle by 0600 when I went home. No damage at home though the guy across the road lost a panel out of his fence (again), he lost one last year and never got around to replacing it so now he has a patchwork fence-panel, gap, panel, gap, hedgerow.

just be on your guard gents…weather reports on the 12 Noon News have stated servere flood warnings in southern England/Wales along with high winds and Snow in Scotland those scots always get the snow 🙁

Yes, apparently Alex Salmond struck a similar deal with god, to the one Kate Bush did back in the 80’s… 😀 Apart from a light flurry last week, I haven’t seen a substantial snow fall where I live for around 2 years. As for today’s storm, nowt here either. But who knows, maybe we’ll see a return of scenes like this around town…

My trip into the office here at Gatwick (normally ca. 40 – 45mins door to door) took 90+ mins this morning due to fallen trees all over mid-Sussex- plus assorted debris/fence panels etc in the gutters and a number of localised flash floods.

The weather since has varied between “damned awful” and “bright and sunny” since then – currently its absolute ****e out there, low cloud, hevay rain, v.strong gusts etc.

A number of flights arriving here have aborted on finals and gone around again (or gone somewhere else?), and one or two have drifted past my office window in various angles of bank and drift. Arrivals board is showing many dleays or cancellations. Glad I’m not flying in or out of here today!

yeah i had severe problems with the storm – it woke me up! 🙁 , seriously though things don’t seem any differant where i am in little Lymington and i’m only like a mile from the sea, oh saying that i can see a fence blown down over the road, oh the drama. Least its not as bad as a lame snow fall.
