Tommy Tuppence and his Flying Circus

OK mods – so what happened to that thread about the chap who was going to do everything that everyone else hadn’t but wanted us to do it all for him? You know – the one who wanted advice but then wouldn’t take it. The one who had all the experience, resources – and even drawings it seems – to build a Spitfire/Hurricane/Whatever, but didn’t know what ‘nachtjagd’ meant.

You know – that one.

I know you were going to stop the thread when Walter Mitty had his final words, but I never did see what they were (although I bet ‘honour’ was one, and ‘mate’ was another).

Any chance you could post it as an archived thread (or tell me where to find it)? Some days can be a right pain, and that series of posts had me in fits of laughter. Just what I need on a hectic work day.

As has been said, the thread brought nothing to the forum, and one or two of the contributions were quite unpleasant.

I stated that I would close it a full day before I did, to allow the OP chance to respond, which he chose not to do.

I knew exactly what I was doing, and that a few readers would frown at my methods. So be it. Apparently some readers were far more willing to give the OP the benefit of the doubt. Not me. I found him extremely offensive. With my initial long and silly post, in which I only mentioned myself, I was simply offering him some rope to help hang himself.

The fact that the thread has been removed, permanently, is, in this instance, A-OK with me. The bug had to be squashed, and the sooner, the better. That his words (and mine) have been erased is for everyone’s benefit.

(Er…um…I did say in that banned thread that I wouldn’t post again — meaning a post in that thread. I am through commenting, once and for all, in this thread. Rejoice!)

It does happen, I remember the one a few years ago about an unknown section of cockpit being used as a shed, evidenced with a small piece of metal with a Stirling part number that looked like a typical crash site fragment. The unresponsive newly joined op came on in a bluster of outrage his post was being questioned as a wind up, and he was going back to classic car forums because I questioned it. Strange what people do to get themselves off

I’m pretty sure it was a wind-up

The initial posts by the character were generally responded to in a fair informative manner. These sensible responses were then ignored or mocked by the person asking for info which is a typical troll response. Just as well the threads gone, leave space for the interesting real posts. Although I enjoyed the comical responses by Matt as he entered the trough of despair.

It was not a good productive or useful thread and its resurrection won’t contribute anything positive to the forum. At worst this would just be plain nasty.

“the sharks will be circling”

I started a thread titled Sharks are circling,(which was a “where has the Orkney spitfire wing thread gone” question) and promptly had it closed by a moggerator, so I expect nothing less from this one.

Personally I think that the thread in question had a tendency to bring out the worst in people, who started to feel duped, and slightly insulted, and thus returning fire, aimed squarely at the OP, it was most likely an exercise in trolling, and quite effective it was as well.

I’m sure someone said a Spitfire had crashed in my garden, just over there where I want to plant potatoes 🙂

Not interested in the banter on that thread, but the chances in this day and age of someone giving you the information for what he wanted is practically zero, you would only have to mention a location/possibility and the sharks will be circling, you will instantly acquire lots of new friends and messages offering you “help” in recovering it, more than likely recovering it before you can. I wouldn’t give information up to the wrong sources

It was from “tommytheace”. I wonder why it has been removed, really did not seem to be doing anyone any harm. Personally I would ask for it to be restored. Seems like a whiff of censorship to me.
