Very true Ian, but by the same token, there may well be qualified individuals out there who would be right for the post, but who may be earning more elsewhere and therefore wouldn’t want or be able to take the cut.

I’ve not looked at the job description yet, but what everyone may be forgetting is that Duxford, as part of the Imperial War Museum, is a national museum. Employees are therefore members of the public sector and not private companies. I’m sure everyone realises that the public sector has always paid less than the equivalent in the private sector. However, there is greater job security and other advantages. It also has the benefit that it mean that someone applying for the job isn’t doing it for the money, but because they are committed to the goals of the organisation. I certainly wouldn’t want to see someone in a senior role at Duxford who only took the job in order to earn a great load of cash, and I’m sure no-one else would either. If you wouldn’t apply for the job because of the pay level, then you are obviously not suitable for the job!

Perception of whether a salary adequately remunerates the individual for the role varies from industry to industry. Jorgo’s got it spot on, the aviation world (with a very few notable exceptions) is comparitively low down the salary scale.
I would argue though that the responsibility in aviation is certainly higher. To put it into perspective, if most of us on here screw up at work our organisations might incur losses on the balance sheet, but everyone’s still able to return home each night…

you people are hard to please that is about the going rate in an expensive area like Oxford and the employer would still expect more from you than is in the job description

I’m going dyslexic
Sorry M42, I was reading it in a hurry before having to urgently change a nappy. Show me a job in aviation that REALLY pays what it’s worth, and I’ll be standing in line for an application form. (Managing Director doesn’t count sorry).

That was my point! I think a bit more dough is in order. They’re asking for lots of organisational, management and PR skills, as well as (preferably) piloting and ATC experience, all for less than a mediocre middle manager in an insurance company is getting (I see them every day….).

Seems a fair price
I think the money will be hard earned. That job certainly has a lot more involved with it than just driving around the fenceline and scaring away the spotters !!

Does anyone else think they’re asking a lot for the money on offer (it says you start at the minimum)?
