On the 30th of July top of the pops will play for the very last time. For over forty years its been staple diet for most teenagers with some massive acts to its name.
whats your view on its demise or whats your favorite DJ or TOTP moment.
I always liked jimmy savile and remember dexy’s midnight runners playing Jackie Wilson says, in front of a giant picture of Jockey Wilson 😀

Do you remember that they actually used to use the BBC Orchestra as backing for the pop groups. Quite amazing now really.
I also discovered that the for the groups that mimed, the cymbals on the drum kit were made of red plastic!
Yes the ‘works band’ were in great demand in those days. Nowadays it’s all Proms in the Park and The Royal Albert Hall… 😀
As for the cymbals for mime shoots… Generally speaking the cymbals are real these days albeit with an extra cymbal glued inside to dampen the sound.

Thats about all they’re good for 😀
And damn good at it they were too, second only to Nina Pedersson from ‘The Cardigans’ who performed a simliar operation upon my sweaty forehead some years earlier… 😎

RenF: Do you know if there is an online catelogue of which acts appeared on any particular show?
I honestly don’t know Janie, but given it’s demise I’d have thought there will be one if there isn’t already..?
I’d also expect a raft of TOTP themed dvd releases covering the golden years and beyond. 😀

I went to watch TOTP many years ago and blagged my way into the after show party under the name Rusty Egan (Sorry Rusty if you failed to get in later!).
Jimmy Saville was not sociable and we were treated like sheep. There was just a small crowd of kids watching and four stages and we were shepherded from one to another. I loved every second of it and the tickets were free.

LOL….
In think TOTP was the bench mark ,that the likes of the tube and the old gray owe a lot to.Any one who worked on the program over the years should be proud of a job well done.
More of a Patti man myself until hot gossip on Kenny Everett.

So ren,is it as busy as it looks ,or are the kids crammed together like jasper carrot says for the cameras…
dave
Well it kind depends on a few things…
A: How many of the invited kids turn up…?
B: How many of the invited kids aren’t ejected for fighting the other kids…?
C: How many of the invited kids aren’t ejected for smoking, and drinking Bacardi Breezers in the bogs…?
When you get a high level of kids falling into categories B&C, it certainly does get a bit like the show Mr Carrott describes… 😀

Latterly I would work on the show from time to time, especially the TOTP Saturday morning edition.
