I personally consider the TOR-M1 (aka SA-15 Gauntlet platform) to be the most advanced of the worlds self-propelled point-defence SAM systems. Certain Russian sources would have you know that the SA-15 can take out anti-radiation missiles (ie HARM, ALARM) at ranges between 3-5 km, and aircraft out 12km.
Can Crotale, Roland, Aspide, Starstreak and Gecko even come close to the performance of the SA-15?
Greece purchased something in the region of 50-60 TOR-M1’s from Russia in the last 3 years, of which 6 units were given to Cyprus. What other countries have it?
I also believe that the TOR-M1(or at least one version of it) has substantial passive detection capabilities (thermal IR), thus stacking up its defensive capabilites against modern anti-radiation missiles.
Is the SA-15 fire-and forget? If so, this would be a big advantage over say, the SA-8 Gecko, as the illumination time of a target would be less, giving less time for a target to fire back.
What would happen if a country like Iraq or North Korea chose to replace their SA-6 Gainfuls with TOR-M1’s? How would NATO respond?
