Hi,
They were used because a certain ‘so called’ aviation company hired monkey’s to do certain repairs on the fuselages in question !!! Won’t bore you with the details but just to give you an idea, they took out fastners / rivets with a hammer and chisel. Normally that wouldn’t bother me so much but that was the best of the worst !:D
Richy.
and two other facts from the MOD contracting out works to save money fiasco were
1. The work was covered up and only discovered by a fortunately suspicious RAF fitter who investigated what was going on, when he reported it to the CO the company were thrown off the base, had this not happened there could have been terrible consequences for the crews using these affected aircraft.
2. At one point because of this a third of our entire defence fleet was grounded
I think the moral of the story is although our wallett smarts when we take our cars back to the main agent for a service it is usually best to go back to the manufacturer rather than go to a back street garage, a lesson I have also learned the hard way.

I’d be keen to see any photos of your current and previous projects as well if you’d like to share them Simon.

Just out of interest, a good few F3’s were rebuilt i early 90’s using centre/rear sections from retired F2’s, why was this?

Found this trace of your A/C, it was on the flightline at RAF Coningsby, Open Day-Scramble Airshow in 1986.

The first few F3s were (allegedly) badly damaged during major rework and possibly the damaged areas were those replaced by the F2 bits
