Showing a pair of F3 Tornados with bright pink drop tanks, taken at Chateaudun Jun 1997.
Anyone know why they are such a tasteful (ahem!) colour?
Regards

Thanks for the link – I didn’t think it was Photoshopped.
I wonder which bright spark chose pink, of all colours…?

I am rather intrigued by this photograph. I recently asked a question on a number of forums about the RAF Conspicuity Trials that took place in the 1990’s.
On one of the forums someone posted the following comment.
“I’ve got an air to air photo of a F3 Tornado with bright red droptanks- I’ll try and scan it to upload when I can, if anyone is interested. Does anyone know if that was part of the same trial? I never did find out. I think that it was in the late 1990s? Maybe it was so that the Nav could confirm whether they had missed the school after punching them off??”
I PM’d the chap a couple of times but recieved no further reply. I wonder if its the same Tornado to which he refers or something differant ?

They look photoshopped… I was on XI(F) fairly soon after that and there was never any mentiuon of bright pink tanks.. That photo would have been on the teabar wall,,,,

Paintshopped to prevent someone knicking the image?

The French do have form for painting jets pink including one of our Harrier T Birds. The story is about half way down this page:

Blimey, when you said pink I was expecting desert pink, that’s something else!
Could it be a bit of French Air Force fun?

The photo was taken in France…. perhaps to show which tank would be used to carry the supply of red wine for back home? 😀
