When looking at my region 2 dvd version of The Battle of Britain , I was trying to figure out how many actual Spitfires the producers found and used in the film that could actually fly? The extras on this new release are excellent and really add to the film itself. Would guess that a few of these real Spits are at Duxford. I believe one of the film’s HE-11’s crashed in the USA , sadly killing two crew members. The last time I was at Duxford in 2002, it looked like a HE-111 was outside behind the main hanger in the back?
Thanks !

BN352. There is quite a lot of good stuff here, if you know where to look. Tim Mills was one of the BoB pilots and if you do a search on this forum on his name, you will find it.
On the main thread which it pulls up , there is another link through to PPRuNe, which has a further very good film thread. You could just go straight to PPRuNe, and again search for Tim Mills. Good luck.

Has anyone talked to at length , any of the pilots who flew in the actual film and can report on how they put this all together back in 1968? Would love to see some links or comments here from the men who actually made this movie and what is was link to fly in this film! So let’s see here….I can see this as an extra credit question for your A levels exam you guys have to take in the UK…… now how many Spits flew in this film??????

Lucky shot?
Here is a shot of not only 8 Spitfires, the B-25 Mitchell and the Heinkel photo ship flying left to right, but also 7 Buchons flying toward the camera and a single fleeting Buchon flying right to left.
Eighteen aircraft in frame at one time – lucky shot? Well it appeared in the Sunday Times Magazine for 19 January 1969. There was no mention that it was a composite shot and this is yonks before digital manipulation.

G-FIRE. G-SPIT is TFC’s MkXIV, MV293/MV268.

The Spitfire MkXIV that was used as a spares source ended up at Strathallan (from RAF Halton) and was eventually bought by Spencer Flack, restored and flew as G-FIRE (or G-SPIT)

Yep….old BlueNoser352 got shot down on ebay as he bid on Dave T’s book on the making of the Battle of Britain. Maybe another one will pop up soon ! Forgot to watch my six in the bidding war ! What was it that Rober Shaw said….’never fly straight and level in the combat zone for more than 30 seconds ” ! Something like that !

Mark:
Thanks for the break down of opeational Spits….great photograph ! Must have taken much planning to fly in such a crowded airspace in 1968. When only twenty something plus years eariler only military fighters & bombers owned the sky !

I have one and it is signed by Mr Rudhall himself. Only found out on the way back to London after having it bought at the IWM shop at Dudford.

Not related to the main thread but the book sold for over £56.
More than I was prepared to offer.

Saw 9 flying with B25 Mitchell over kent…during filming..
The greatest number of BoB film Spitfires in formation that I have on record is ten.
This formation is being lead by a Tr.IX almost certainly TE308. The other Tr.IX MJ772 was ‘bellied in’ at Little Staughton by ‘Connie’ Edwards quite early on in the summer’s filming. The other missing Spitfire from this shot, by elimination, five prop blades and a retracting tailwheel, is one of the BBMF’s MK XIX’s. With CD-F PM631 in view, it will be PS853.

Martin:
Did you see my message to you about the Swiss film made with USAFF airmen during the war ? I got a reply on the Eighth message boards and found a copy of the film , with help from someone in Belgium. It was something I had been searching from since I saw this British documentary called ‘ Whispers from the Sky”, shown in the USA on the Discovery Channel. It delt with what the RAF Bomber Command called (LMF) and USAFF crews going to neutral countries like Sweden & Switzerland. Thanks if you saw the message and started to email me back …thanks !

So what became of the spanish casa fleet. Were they all scrapped in the end or have any made their ways to a museum ?
All where scrap after the movie was completed but I think maybe two or three where set aside for musuems.
When my Dad was station in Rota durning the early 70s their was two hulks that where used for fire training not sure what happen to them. Wasn’t their a rumor that a dump had been found in Spain that contain some of the Casa or was that Portugal and Casa build Ju-52s.
