Toys as a kid?

When you guys, and girls were smaller what type of aircraft related toys did you have if any?

My dad built me an airport, not a real one of course. lol. :p But still it was quite a big model, took up 1/3 of the living room floor!

So what did you guys have?

I used to have a Cessna type aircraft from the German Toy Company Playmobil. Used to be able to give the aircraft gas, put luggage in a compartment and place to figures in the aircraft. What memories I have of that. Sadly, years after I put the toys in the attic, I noticed while in a toy shop that they had bought out a large passenger aircraft with airport terminal, after so many years of wishing for one 😡
Today I only collect models of which I have a fair few.

Model kits for me. Mainly military aircraft but the odd airliner crept in. Somehow they never looked as good when covered in gluey fingerprints! I still build kits now, and I’m not necessarily any better at it but I enjoy dabbling. My other big passion as a child was books, and if it was an aircraft book so much the better.

😡

I think that was the only bad thing about it – the runway length. I can remember thinking that i was a bit small.

I had thousands and thousands of lego bricks and could make my own airport and I even built a BBJ (my own version) with a huge galley, a bedroom and a large seating area. Even the wings looked good – they were the right shape and had an air brake and flaps which moved 180 degrees!

Jolly good stuff..!!

I’m still annoyed I never got the “real” Lego Airport.

I had a toy AC 747 and L1011 and an AA DC 8 and DC 10. And, yes T5, sorry, I had the Lego airport and extra aircraft. Ialso built my own air stairs and vehicles to service the planes. I though the runway was not an acurate length so I turned my entire bedroom into the tarmac for more runway space and used the ready made tarmac just for near the terminal area. I never thought that I would be talking about that at age 29.

I can remember the best aeroplane toy that I had was a large tinplate Lockheed Electra in the “lightning bolt” American Airlines colours. It was battery operated and all 4 props worked as did the “nav lights” and illumination in the flight deck, I think it was made in Japan. I have never seen another one but what I wouldn’t give to play with it just one more time!

My childhood seems light years away, but I used to enjoy making the Airfix kits. I had a Spitfire, a Hurricane, a Sopwith Camel , a Bristol Blenhiem and a Consolidated Catalina, but my pride and joy was a model of the battleship H.M.S Hood, it took me about 6 weeks to complete it, it had pride of place in my bedroom for quite a few years.

I liked to make planes out of Lego. I also used to help my Grandad make models of WW2 aircraft.
The only models I have now are a Sabena A319, a BA Concorde, a Sabena 747-300, a Sabena A310 and an AF A340.

I was pretty much past the toys age when I got interested in planes although I did have a rarther fetching set of pyjamas with airliners printed on them as a 5 year old.

Nowadays my toys are all flight sims and add ons.

The only aviation related toys I had were a Lego Cargo aircraft and a few Matchbox jets; DHL Learjet 45, Lufthansa 747 and a British Airways DC-10. My collection of “toys” has now expanded to 2 snap-together aircraft; an Excel Airways 737 and an Airtours International A330!

I always wanted the Lego Airport which was about £70 (about as expensive as Lego got about ten years ago) but every birthday and Christmas I opened up presents containing the usual rubbish! I never did get it, but I did a Lego train set, so I was happy!
