Tracing relatives

Is there any good starting point for trying to find out who would have been at a certain station during a particular period?

My father was adopted during the war and in the last couple of weeks he has finally tracked down his natural mother who is still alive, something we never expected. She had a brief affair with someone in the RAF (she was a rather young WAAF and it explains aviation being in the blood), we have an approximate date and surname but only know it was somewhere in the Hull area.

All rather vague but we want to try so any suggestions or advice would be really appreciated.

Father’s name is blank on the birth certificate so we’ve always assumed we’d never find out, pm sent with details.

Do you have your father’s birth certificate to see if his father’s name is on it? If you let me know your grandmother’s maiden name I’ll have a look on Ancestry for you, may find a few clues 🙂

ORBs are a good shout. They are available online for around £3 for any one month, so find the local squadrons and ask for their ORBs for that August. They came up trumps for me whilst looking for my great uncle who was killed in a crash off Cornwall. I know your quest is a bit more of a long shot, but the ORBs are a pretty good starting point

Best of luck with your search

If you want to grind – try the ORB’s held at Kew for likely candidate stations/establishments and go through them for the time frame.

In my experience airmen/women get a mention if they are arriving for a course, are posted or something else that warrants inclusion. Sometimes you’ll find movement orders included which will list every person from the unit and where they are going to from if there is a detachment going out somewhere.

If the natural mother was a WAAF can you find her service records and see what stations she was at ?

All we’ve got to go on is the name Morley (or variation of) somewhere in the Hull region and August 1942, not a lot to go on really and we may well be clutching at straws.

Do you have any leads at all, RAF station, squadron, aircraft types, trade etc.?
