Don’t panic Jim, Mallard’s not off anywhere. The 2 A4’s from the US and Canada are over for some restoration and to help celebrate the anniversary of Mallard’s record run. After that they’ll be off back across the pond.

critter592.
Have I missed something here?.
What’s this about the A4 going over the Pond?.
I have a vested interest in Mallard, she drew blood from me, fitting a new water scoop.

Graham,
That be the one! :diablo:

Nice shots of the A4s; hope to get up there before they disappear back across the pond for the next few decades…

Mallard, the Spitfire of the train world!

I agree, both were sods to work on, however, I have stripped a Merlin, from a dig, but that’s as far as I go. What was working on a Spitfire like to work on?. anyone wish to reply?.

I’ll email them to you Jim. Shall chuck in a couple of some of the other locos too.

That’s very kind of you Graham, thanks.

Hi Graham, she sure brought back some memories, I loved the photo. any chance of a photo, it would come in handy, as part of “Grand dads” life history.
Thanks again.

Would you mean this one Don?

As for the purists, well, I stopped posting on another forum quite a while ago, due to several sarcy PMs I got regarding my layout…
Whenever I encounter them, I now tell ’em to s0d off – I will run whatever I jolly well like, and I shall enjoy myself whilst doing it.
After all, isn’t that what the hobby’s supposed to be about? Enjoyment?

😀
Jim, as promised I said hello to Mallard on Friday for you.

As well as her sisters, Dwight D Eisenhower and Union of South Africa who were at NRM. Here DDE is being shy…

Nowt wrong with that! Even though it’d upset the die hards no doubt 😀

Graham, speaking of die-hards, please feel free to quote my comment on NRM about those people! :D:diablo:

One of the things I miss to this day is my train set, when we moved to the States my parents wouldnt let me bring it with me. All the carriages were hand painted as were all the freight cars, no plastic either, all metal. it also had a fully working rail car recovery train. All were kept in thier original boxes when not in use. Last seen on Stevens Drove, Houghton. Hampshire. for those searching for a nice set. J

Isle of Wight RailwayI

I have built part of the Isle of Wight railway in “OO” Three sides of a bedroom,
4x4x4M. All the points are operated from a central board. All the buildings are Metcalfe. I’ll try and rustle up some photo’s.

How right you are – smells evoke as many memories as sight and sound, more in some cases.

Yes, I must agree they did have their own smell, as do the old aircraft, the smell of leather in a vintage car etc.

I relived some of my earlier enjoyment of steam when my grandson went through the “steam engine” phase but then moved on to planes and football, so I haven’t enjoyed the smell of soot for a while now!!:)

I can’t answer that one Charlie, They were a simple but effective safety device, If you get the chance to get on the footplate of one of the Golden Oldies, If memory serves me correct, it was an oblong box with a dial in the centre which was segregated into segments of white, and which shows the system was working, however when tripped, I cannot recall, but the segments turned either white or black, As a fitter, I never had to repair or take one to bits, they were simple and effective. It may well be the accident was a result of switchpoints failing to work.

if an engine “Ran” a Red signal, the ATC, Automatic Train Control, was activated which slammed on the brakes.

Do I recall this system or something similar failing, resulting in serious rail crash in north London/Hertfordshire many years ago? Or have I got my wires badly crossed….?
