Just a quick update – 744 has now been reassembled and is in a temporary location at her new home. Next stage is a full wash-and-brush up before complete restoration in No 1 Squadron colours.

Its quite unusual to see the engine aft section used to support the aft nozzles in a display aircraft.

Some interesting photos here showing its current condition: http://www.tangmere-museum.org.uk/events-gallery/harrier-xv744-arrives-at-tangmere

Nice to see a Sea Harrier and GR.3 displayed together.

XV744
I,m sure XV744 is going to be looked after at Tangmere. Inside or out, it’s got to be better treated than it was at Shrivenham, best they could do was pump the tyres up when they wanted to move it around, until it eventually ended up in the corner out of the way.

I have allways wanted to go to Tangmere, and its one I have not got too yet – whats the best way from London?
You’ll find a location map and other useful information to help with your visit here: http://www.tangmere-museum.org.uk/tickets-and-visiting.
The rest of the site is worth a look before you come, too. 🙂

I’m afraid I don’t, Phil but I’d be very pleased to hear from anyone who does – especially if they have a photo.

No it wasn’t a back-up machine. Both aircraft took part in the race -XV741 from London to New York flown by Tom Lecky-Thompson and XV744 from New York to London flown by Graham Williams.
Pete
Thanks for clearing that one up PeteP!!
Out of interest, do you know if 744 also carried the 20th anniversary markings as per 741?
Regards,

Hope not, it’ll be priced out of the country.

I was under the impression that XV741 had been acquired by Jet Art

Is XV741 still at Gosport? Reported there in ’09.

Fast train from Waterloo to Portsmouth (Harbour or Town). Off at HAVANT…cross over to Chichester platform and wait for CHICHESTER train. Whole journey time….2hours +a little. Taxi or bus to Tangmere….15/20 mins. Well worth a day out.

XV741 East to West in a time of 5hrs 57m, and return leg by XV744 West to East quicker at 5hrs 31m

Ah, yes. I’d forgotten it was a two stage race.

744 was indeed the back up machine.

XV741!!
I always thought XV741 was the Transatlantic Air Race Harrier 😉
I’m not sure but wasn’t 744 the back up machine??

Thought you might like to see a picture of XV744 taken a few years ago parked at Shrivenham.
By: Derekf - 15th March 2013 at 20:34
Is that the one I saw at Shrivenham in January?
