I’ve had a thought (‘take cover’)…
I wonder how many of us travel to at least 1 airshow a year with a spare seat (or two), possibly in a sat nav equipped car that could take a similar enthusiast (or two)? If willing drivers wanted to, why don’t we have to hand a sticky thread of car owners, their rough county location (e.g. North Sussex), and commonly attended shows? This way, anyone wanting a lift to a show can thumb a lift by sending a pm to a driver who might pass their area. Even a lift the day before might work out if the pax sorts out accomodation and gets their own way to the show after that.
There would of course be rules, which would place the driver firmly in control, something like this:
A PM doesn’t have to be answered, but it is polite to do so.
Driver decides time of pick up, no waiting at pick up point. Be there or lose the lift.
Driver decides return journey time. If they decide to stay at the show longer on a whim, so be it. Passenger waits.
Music/heating/ventilation etc at the drivers whim but SAFE DRIVING!
For those with mobility issues, I for one would make a special effort to get them to the show (with a helper if one is available).
A petrol contribution is the decent thing to do, but the vehicle is not ‘for hire’.
Conversation in the car is not a given. If the driver does not wish to engage, it doesn’t mean he is unfriendly, he just prefers to do the lift and that’s it.
There is no obligation to ‘pal around’ with each other at the show, many of us prefer to go our own way for the duration.
There IS an obligation to return a passenger to their pick up point.
All things considered, the stars need to be lined up pretty well to make a lift work out, but wouldn’t it be great to help each other out and perhaps make friends?
This is just an idea, if we go ahead it will take many inputs with the best ideas to make it work. Comments and potential drivers welcome (if this thread sinks quickly, the answer is self evident ). THIS IS NOT THE LIST, JUST FLOATING AN IDEA CHAPS!

HA HA I can see the comments post-airshow . XXXX gave me a lift to Duxford , he turned up in a Vectra …my god people actually go out & buy those things , never again!!
Or I had a ride to Cosford with XXXXXX nice bloke ,but , his car was a 10 yr old Nissan Primera ! what a heap & only a tape player with an audio book tape of War & Peace . Never mind it could have been worse it could have been a Renault Laguna or a Mondeo???
We need to be grateful or people help & generosity as long as the old ” I wouldnt be seen dead in one of those” doesnt creep in.
As for me I drive non mainstream vehicles so I couldnt care less what I’m seen in!!

Legends Sunday
A lift to and from Legends is available for the Sunday. Departing Whitchurch, Shropshire 5am. I’m happy to pick up en-route if reasonable travelling time (can leave earlier in return for a nice bottle of Spitfire). Check out a route-planner to see if it’s workable. I want to arrive at the gate nice ‘n early 😉
All other driver/pax conditions are on the first post of this thread.
Be warned: I might have to get in the mood (for a few minutes at least!) with Sounds of Shuttleworth Vol 2 😉
Please PM me if interested

Happy to take one person (only got a 2-seater!!) from Gloucester area to various shows/museums/events throughout the summer, or pick up en route. Perhaps we should have a spare seat sticky thread on the forum next year?

Cheers and thanks very much,

I live in Welwyn and often go to Old Warden and Duxford shows if anyone wants a lift-You will need to appreciate REM though (or at least be able to tolerate them!)

I go up the A303/M3/M25/M11 to Duxford for FLs as well as some other shows. But I tend to stay overnight.
Funny how this thread can degenerate into the ‘use Map vs use GPS brigade!’.
I have both ‘nav aids’ in my car, if I am picking up someone en route, it is far easier/less stress to have their post code…who would not want a less stress journey/life?!….only a Yoghurt!!!

totally agree moggy! In all fairness it only takes a modicum of common sense to drive to a different city – just need to know which way you’re going and a vague understanding of uk geography!
I agree, getting from a major place to a major place when traffic is ok is fine ,BUT how often have you been diverted, how often are you looking for a specific small area within a larger heavily congested area.
Planning with a map is fine but when plans are thrown out the window by something unexpected and you need to know whether to stay on a motorway or get off and go via back roads ,well.
Anyway, the whole argument is null and void if you don’t have or use one 🙂

…for many who are happy to embrace useful technology, sat nav makes their lives easier
Don’t get me wrong.
I have a built-in satnav in the posh car (pretty useless), a portable Garmin in the big car, a Pilot 111 for the aircraft, an Airspace Aware on the panel of the aircraft and Co-Pilot Live on my phone.
I have spent over forty years driving something in excess of a million miles, I can get anywhere I like in this country or abroad using a simple map. The advent of Google maps on the computer make it even easier. Equally I can navigate the aircraft using compass and stopwatch, just as I was taught.
It merely amused me that the original comment almost implied that without satnav, the offer of a lift could possibly fall through from the difficulty of locating the pick-up point. Ten years ago I doubt the poster would have written “.. possibly in a car with maps on board “
Satnav makes things easier. Total reliance on it is a Bad Thing 😮

Great idea !!!!
I’m in Accrington.
Would also be interested to hear from anyone who would like to car share on visits to old airfields (particularly Bomber Command and 8th Air Force).
Cheers

Is this a comment on modern life?
What’s wrong with maps?

(Bait taken)
In a sense, yes it is a comment on modern life. I think dropping in a comment like ‘possibly sat nav equipped’ reflects the world we live in, and that for many who are happy to embrace useful technology, sat nav makes their lives easier (in this case, to easily get to a pick up point in an unfamiliar area). I’m aware of the perils of not keeping the software up to date, and of being taken up a blind alley, but it’s all about how you use it.
What map (and I do carry one) can alert me of traffic snarl ups and auto-re-route me? The big road maps are bulky, inconvenient, and for safe study require you to park up.

Ah, Moggy – a man after my own heart! I accept that Sat Nav has a role but the problem is that if it used without any other knowledge, and it misdirects, the driver has no idea of his location.
The number of times I have had exasperated drivers on the phone, lost trying to find our offices, but who have no map in the vehicle.
A good parallel is using a calculator without having the remotest idea what the answer should be.

If there’s a few within the area why not hire a mini bus and split costs?
Or Train travel but this may be a little expensive for many.

Anything that helps, even planes use sat nav 🙂 Don’t forget if you are on your own going to an area you are not familiar with and have a timetable to stick to to meet a stranger as such all help is welcome.
I don’t generally use a sat nav but there are many occasions i wished i had.
I hope that people do manage to get on,it is going to be a long tortuous journey if you don’t hit it off.

I’ll be travelling from North Shropshire to Duxford and perhaps Old Warden ‘sometime’ during the year.
By: Beermat - 10th November 2010 at 08:54
Can take at least two from Cambridge Station to Little Gransden next year.
By: Sky High - 10th November 2010 at 08:30
I like the rules of travel!;) But I will be going to all the Duxford shows from Kent but as for others much depends on the state of the wallet nearer the time! And depending on whether or not family members accompany me I will have 3 seats or no seats. More info after the Winter…..:)
By: ollieholmes - 10th November 2010 at 02:06
Id be happy to help. I always have at least 2 spare seats going. I tend to do Old Warden and Little Gransden although im hoping to do more this year.
