Word of warning, when I made the reservation I was quoted what I’d consider to be a fair fee for the new hotel, for a three night stay. I’ve since popped in to take a look at the place, checked the reservation and prices and found that what I’ll actually be paying is almost double what I was quoted! Eye watering figures. Not much they can do as it’s my word vs. theirs… It was also £1.50 for a can of coke from the lobby vending machine if I remember correctly, which seems a bit mad.
On the plus side, the hotel looks fantastic. Nice downstairs bar with a strong aviation theme. Quite terrific all round.
the price was a bit more than i was expecting, but the other places we’re staying at on our holiday have been pretty reasonable so i guess it’s not too bad to be paying a bit more for the convenience of this one.
the web site pics do look nice though ,and i hope the famous red lion bar will still be open for a post airshow debrief 😎

Hi, Quick update… I still want to go, but i can’t go by aircraft anymore (time changed at Cry an air)… But the Mrs isn’t keen on letting me go three weekends in a row ( i also booked waddo and RIAT)… Seriously thinking of Skipping RIAT…
Cheers,

@ Beermat.
I think i willl do the train to cambridge and then the shuttles from there on to Duxford… i will try it on forehand on the Spring show… (IF THE MRS WILL GIVE HER GREEN FLAG 😀 )
AS long as im in Stansted before 19.30 there isn’t any problem.. (leave me 2 and a half hours to get from Duxford to Stansted)… or perhaps i can ride with someone on the way back… im not a bad person if i say so myself

splash out on a taxi on your way back to Cambridge.
😮 That will cost more than your flight..

Aaaaahhhhh! Bliss on a plate – or several, in your case.:D:D
Reading these posts makes me realise how we DID manage the Empire………
By: ZRX61 - 9th November 2010 at 17:10
All these breakfast posts have got my mouth watering! I’m with Moggy – with pig as the predominating dead animal involved plus a few chickens which haven’t started life.
Indeed, I was motivated to employ THREE frying pans for breakfast this morning & ended up with enough food that it required not only 2 plates, but also 2 attempts at polishing it off 🙂 AND I had pepperbacon omnomnomnom:p
btw, reading this thread makes me wonder how the hell we ever managed The Empire….

@ Trumper.
That’s strange because every ticket agency keeps saying it’s possible with National Express East Anglia for the Whittlesford – Audly end track and then the Crosscountry from Audly to Stansted, Waiting Half an hour of waiting isn’t that bad because we are used to waiting here for the train in the Netherlands..
You have 2 companies run on that line.National Express East Anglia run from Cambridge to Bishops Stortford then you need to change at Bishops Stortford to Stansted Airport. These trains STOP at Whittlesford.
Cross Country run trains direct from Cambridge to Stansted Airport but they DO NOT stop at Whittlesford, although you MAY be able to get from Whittlesford to Audley End on NXEA and connect there to get on a Cross Country train direct from Audley End to Stansted Airport.
Obviously that can’t really be planned until the May timetable change next year.:)

moggy we’re trying for the Whittlesford one just waiting for their reply atm,new room old room doesn’t matter when your eyes are closed but spending more time with new friends priceless 😀 (and a few beverages )
wouldn’t mind meeting bader

Still plenty of time to book the Whittlesford Red Lion and then cancel the other.
Pros: Handier for the station, handier for Duxford (Both are easy walks), staying where Bader and his men spent their evenings.
Cons: The Holiday Inn extension might mean a room in a souless modern block, rather than the historic inn itself. The Hinxton one has no such possibility.

I always take the train from Stansted direct to Cambridge and then the airshow bus from the Cambridge train station. If you wanna do that one and make sure you make it back to Stansted, splash out on a taxi on your way back to Cambridge.
By: Beermat - 9th November 2010 at 13:39
Oz, if you guys need a lift on Friday I’m local and it’s no problem to pick you up from the station and run you to the Red Lion in Hinxton. Just let me know nearer the time when you’ll be there 🙂 Don’t know about the return journey, though – depends when, as I’ll have a newborn and a Hurricane to look after over the weekend! There’s always taxis.
TG, I guess coaches are out then. Still, train Stansted – Cambridge and free bus Cambridge – Duxford is still an option which MIGHT be easier depending upon connections. It saves you the walk, as well.

Thanx for the suggestion for the coaches. Only the coaches stop running between after 18.15 and continue 20.15… that would bring me in serious trouble for the flight back if i miss the 18.15 coach.

damn it if i cant get a room at the Whittlesford redlion i may need that bike that an earlier poster offered 😮
By: Beermat - 9th November 2010 at 13:16
Sadly no – the line goes right by it (you can see it on the map above), but there’s no stop there.
There’s one at Great Chesterford, on the same line – almost exactly the same distance away as Whittlesford, but to the South. EDIT – actually no, it’s further away.
By: oz rb fan - 9th November 2010 at 13:02
Yes, there’s one in Whittlesford (the usual post-Legends watering hole – marked A on the map) and one in Hinxton (marked B on the map). Not to worry, they’re not far apart, here’s a map:
does Hinxton have a station and is it on the same line as whittlesford?

Welcome to our wonderful, integrated and just downright useful public transport network. Oh, and heavy British sarcasm.
TG, another option to consider. Stansted-Cambridge by train (OR NATIONAL EXPRESS COACH). Then jump on the free airshow shuttle bus (this runs from Cambridge station). If you choose Stansted-Cambridge by Coach, you can even cut out some time by getting off the coach at ‘Trumpington park and ride’, and picking up the airshow shuttle from there.
See http://duxford.iwm.org.uk/server.php?show=nav.619 – bottom of page – ‘getting to the airshows’

😮 BE WARNED ,TRAINS DO NOT RUN DIRECT FROM WHITTLESFORD TO STANSTED AIRPORT – – – – You can only go direct from Cambridge or Audley End[ at the moment].
If you go from Whittlesford you will have to change at Bishops Stortford
I MUST EMPHASIS THAT THERE WILL BE 2 TIMETABLE CHANGES BETWEEN NOW AND LEGENDS,ONE IN December and one in MAY .
You will need to allow 30 mins to get near Bps Stortford, then change time and wait for next train to Stansted http://www.crosscountrytrains.co.uk/SiteImages/Assets/3/Timetable_Birmingham_to_Leicester_Stansted_Airport_May_2010.pdfed and that may be a half hour wait as well.
Please note these timetables will be out of date by Legends
I hope this helps 🙂
