Travel To Northern Cyprus

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-01-03 AT 07:11 PM (GMT)]For me, this years summer vacation was a choice between the jewel of the Adriatic, Croatia, or the unspoiled and sun drenched island of Northern Cyprus, the latter winning.

Now I know some of you frequent Cyprus, however, are any of you familiar with the northern half and if so what are your opinions and advice on me travelling there? The flight via Turkey to Ercan is a bit of a downer, however, I like a holiday that involves more than just relaxing by the pool or on the beach, I am looking for adventure and excitement. So is Northern Cyprus the place for me to do this?

Also, what is the contrast between southern and northern Cyprus? Is the north a place for the more discerning tourist compared to the southern areas of Paphos and Larnaca?

Anyone’s help in providing me information is much appreciated. Thanks.

RE: Travel To Northern Cyprus

It is quite cheap and good value. The hotel we are staying for 5 people is just under £670 for 14 nights. You can get under that at around £400 or even lower if you go for a villa. For food and drink, an ice cream is around 20p with a beer at 50p.
According to what I have read you can see the Turkish coast so I will let you know if this is true :7 Also thanks for offering me help with Turkish phrases. If there is anything baffles me then I will email you, however, I usually do just grasp the basics with enough to get me by!

RE: Travel To Northern Cyprus

Not any intention to flame anyone, but just of purely personal opinion, the only part of Northern Cyprus I want to see, is the part in the heads-down display telem of a TV-guided AGM Maverick.

I don’t think I could express my discontent of Turkish occupation any better than that.

Just a question ??? , after Cyprus split there were some aircraft left stranded in the North , there was a bullet holed HS Trident is it still there ???? .
GeeDee , I’m sitting in my office looking out at a very bleak and wet Scotland , your post means that I’m going straight to the Direct Holidays website to seek some sunshine and beer.

RE: Travel To Northern Cyprus

Well thank you very much all of you information and advise on my trip to Northern Cyprus.
Geedee your reply will undoubtedly come in of some use on my trip to the island. The tension and unease is the one matter that obviously is concerning me. However, when I look through the brochures, the look of the port of Kyrenia, the azure sea and the countless historical areas just tempts me even more to travelling here. It is not just my opinion on the subject, my family must also be considered to. If we are in agreement that Northern Cyprus suits our needs are ideas for a vacation then it will certainly be the place we go.

RE: Travel To Northern Cyprus

there are ferries that operate from Turkey to TRNC. I have never been to TRNC because

1) more expensive than Turkey
2) Cypriot Turks don’t like the Turks from mainland (especially if you are a military brat)
3) they charge you for getting there if you are a mainlander

I would just go to Turkey and if you want to really see there, just take a ferry ride and come back.. If you like the Casinos TRNC is the place to be.

If I were you I would visit there before everybody starts speaking Greek.. just to keep a historic note in your mind.
yeaah.. there used to be Turks living here…..

RE: Travel To Northern Cyprus

Adrian

I have lived here in the south for two years now and have a few observations to make.

Before I start, I wish to make it clear that I will not enter into any political why’s or wherefor’s in respect of the current state of the Island with anyone (on or off-Island).

As you say, Cyprus is indeed a beautifull place. Irrespective of the arguing going on between various parties, the actual geography and climate of the Island is top notch. Obviously with the Mediterranean climate thrown in yuo would be hard pressed to find a more freindly, easy going place with a terrific culture and loads of extremes.

Loads of extremes ???. Most places in the south are little more than an hour and a half drive by Twincab away from each other. I live near the Akrotiri peninsula and can drive to Nicosia in just over an hour and a half, Paphos in uaround 3/4 of an hour, Polis, Latchi in just over an hour and can be at the top of the Troodos mountains in one hour exactly. I can go snow ski’ing in the morning and be on the beach in the afternoon for water ski’ing and finish off with a Meze and few beers all in one day withought breaking into a sweat.

The hardest thing about driving is the constantly changing vista’s, from wide open rolling landscape to huge mountain ranges to jaw dropping cliff views….that and the apparent lack of a highway code, but that just adds to the general experience. You just dont know whats around the next corner.

the wildife is totally alien to UK. where in the UK can you have Preying Mantis in your garden, Chameleons in the house and Vultures…chuffing great budgies with 12 foot wingspan…free flying ?…then there are the Scorpions, Cyprus widow (cousin to the black widow) that can put a grown man flat on his back for a week), umpteen types of ants from little one’s you can hardly see to bladdy great monsters that make the ants on Tom and Jerry look ridiculous.
Free flying Love birds etc etc etc…the list is endless.

Religion plays a very big part in the South. Events like Christmas, Easter and countless others are celebrated in a fashion that you wont see in the UK. I cant describe the difference…you just have to witness it for your self.It can be very emotional

I admit that I have so far been North of the border twice since being here. Again, it absolutely picturesque, especially the coast road up the pan handle…gobsmacking !. As to adventure / excitement…hmmmm, not much evidence of that, that I have seen. The occupying force is very in your face and I have felt decidedly uneasy on a few occassions in broad daylight in a large town. It is not as freindly as the south !. You are obviously limited as to places of interest to visit due lack of geographical real estate so your options are numbered.

I would say that depending on what you want from your holiday would depend decide where you go. I would also say that the south has shedloads of stuff to do whatever you takes your fancy. Yes you can relax by a pool, or on the beach anywhere, but as you say that can get a bit much sometimes.

For a quite vacation in an area that gives a feeling of living in the past about 30 years, try the North…I think you will get fed up very quickly.

Alternatively, come down south. There is shed loads more to see and do . Ignore Ayia Napa and its wall to wall drunk, teenagers and non stop parties (unless thats what turns you on ?). there is more to Cyprus than you could possibly even hope to scratch the surface of in a few weeks. Get out and about and explore. The experience is very well worth it.

You want adventure / exitement ? think of a sport…times the places where you think you could partake in it by twenty and that gives you an idea of what is here. Obviously weater sport of any kind from fishing to diving, to powerboating, kite surfing sailing …any thing you can possibly do on the water, feature heavily. You into ruins, a few weeks here and all that stuff you learned at school about Apollo and his mates suddenly all makes sense, when you can walk on his patio and check out his granny annexe.

Yes there are the tourist trap area’s…keep away cos they are full of the same tacky stuff you can get in any other Meditteranean country, but it is a trade…check out the villages in the mountains, explore the old back roads….and I’ll tell ya what….you want to leave.

Leather, Lace, Jewellry, all absolute top dollar stuff, but cheap.

The standard of living I would say, even though VAT has jsut gone up to 15 % is cheaper than the UK.

The food is so mouthwatering, I’m dribbling as I type and the local brews are …well come and try for yourself.

There is more to tell but I dont intend cluttering up this thread and I dont want to start sounding like a one man travel agent so I’ll shut here. If you wanna know more drop me an e-mail

cheers

Gary

RE: Travel To Northern Cyprus

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-01-03 AT 06:11 PM (GMT)]Apologies, but this is no attempt at a flame topic, I am very much serious. I have been looking through holiday brochures and via the internet and I have to say it looks beautiful.
There seem to be many hotels and it looks like it has some very nice tourist areas like Kyrenia? Do you really advise me not to go there?

I am aware of the political reasons why I should not go there, but having talked to a few people, they say it is beautiful and a complete contrast between the southern areas and is a very cheap place to go. Thus can it really be that bad?

Thankyou for your help so far…

RE: Travel To Northern Cyprus

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-01-03 AT 00:50 AM (GMT)]A330 crazy

>Adonis perhaps you can elaberate on what it actually does say?

the writing is in Turkish and is translated as ‘Proud to be a Turk’.

it’s painted in such a way that it can be seen by the Greek Cypriots (internationally recognised by 172 countries)in the south as an act of provocation.

Saab2000 i don’t recommend you go to the north due to reasons stated above but what i would say is travel to the south first and then make enquiries about crossing over, you will find my fellow countrymen as helpful as possible :7
