Arrived in Patras on friday evening and ran up to Athens, by the time i got there my drop had well closed so ran to the airport to see if i could find some spotting locations (was trawling the net endlessly looking for a site with spotting locations to no avail!!!) anyway found myself driving the big red blunderbus down dirt tracks to get near the perimeter…. did find a nice spot near the 03L threshhold and shot the following just as the sun was going down.. awesome light:

And with that the sun went behind a mountain!
I then went to have a look around for other vantage points and came across a retail park next to the airport with a fantastic huge car park next to Ikea that was right beside 03L which is where i stopped for the night. As i had only limited time i never bothered going looking for a spot at 03R What seemed to happen was 03L mostly landers and 03R mostly deps…..
Saturday morning 6am: got woken by the whine of 3 dash 8’s queuing to depart off of 03L after which by the time i got sorted and got the camera out departures switched over to 03R!! and unfortunately the landers also headed that way..including a Thai 777!!! after a half hour dry spell 03L started to get busy…..

More to follow……………..

Good shots there Tartan. Pity you were a bit unlucky with not getting any middle east stuff such as Kuwait A320s, Etihad A320s, Gulf A320s and Royal Jordanian Embraers. I went to Athens in 1994 and some of the stuff was truly exotic but the lighting was poor from the Emmantena Hotel rooftop.

Nice on Scotty. Good to see you can still get shots with all hills behind, as in the Aegean and Olympic 320s. Too bad there was no decent traffic for you but that’s you been there now, sooked it and seen.

info i got from a Greek spotter is dont shoot at military fields fine at civil. the Ikea car park runs half the length of the taxiway and when i got there at 9pm there were lots of folk along the fence…not spotters..all sitting watching the action.. in the morning i made no secret i was shooting and had police and airport security driving past quite often without batting an eyelid at me, the closer landing shots were taken from a public road outside the airport again no problems.. i never went to the terminal freight or runway 03R area, but generally seemed quite relaxed

Any security issues in Athens for taking pics? Thought it was a bit of a no go.

Aye.. it seems Aegean are the prime operator out of ATH.

Very nice indeed! Some great shots. Nice to see Olympic still about, albeit a shadow of its former self. First coffee of the day, and some nice airliner pics, doesn’t get much better than that.:) Ditto for your other 3 posts.
